Ears Cropped at 4 months of age?

So, I am in the process of "rescuing" a 4 month old female Dobe from an individual on Craigslist. No papers... said they couldn't afford to buy her with her AKC papers. But that matters not to me, b/c I'm NOT a byb and do not intend to be. We spay & neuter ALL of our PETS. I'm not sure about the breeder & all that jazz. She's undoubtedly from a BYB litter, or a not so reputable kennel. But I'd rather give her an awesome, loving, safe home than risk any sleezo picking her up from CL to fight or bait. Anyway, her ears are not cropped. I still need to call around to a few of the reputable vets in my area, but in veteran Dobe owners opinions, is 4 months too late for a sucessful crop? I am fully aware of, & prepared for, all the aftercare, taping & posting. I'm a stay at home Mommy and have the availability to take super good care of her after crop needs. I have an English Bulldog, so I'm well versed in taking care of doggie health issues! But any first hand experience, stories, and just plain old advice would be much appreciated! Thank you!

One little thing, "rescue" is a term used when you pay no money for a dog you get from bad circumstances. If you pay any money, then you have bought the dog, even if it came from a bad situation. Except shelters, then you pay and "adopt" the dog.

Four months of age is really too old to crop. Most reputable breeders crop their puppies between the ages of 7 to 10 weeks, with the average being 8 weeks. A lot of vets who don't really know how to crop, crop at 3 months of age. In fact, that is one good way to tell if they know what they are doing. I have heard of one four month old puppy being cropped and I think they stood. But a vet that does a crop at that age will most likely do a short crop as those are the ones that will stand.

Personally, at her age, I would just leave them natural. Natural ears are beautiful, too.:)

As far as I am concerned, if you've paid anybody, including a shelter, than you've bought the dog.

I paid one dollar to buy my first dog. I paid the dollar to a bunch of kids who were playing catch with him. The ethics of his acquisition never much bothered me...

I would not attempt to crop the ears of a 4 month old puppy. Twelve weeks is about the latest. If you did crop, you would really have to do a very short crop with lots of bell in order to have a chance of them standing.... it is not an attractive crop at all.

Natural ears are beautiful too! :)

The individual who you are buying from, could we have a bit more information about the situation? I've heard the whole 'Oh I rescued this dog and I need hundreds in order to blah blah blah' a few times, and I think its often a scam to guilt people into "rescuing" or buying a BYB's dog. This is just an assumption, but I would be interested to hear a little more info.

That's why I said "rescuing", in quotes. She wasn't taken from horrid conditions in a puppy mill or anything. But I consider anyone getting rid of their dog on Craigslist a bad situation. They don't care, or know where that pup is going, they just want it gone. I'm reimbursing what they've paid out in shots/vetting thus far, which is minimal. Basically it was the typical, we got the dog then a couple months later realized we can't afford to take care of it, situation. They aren't breeders. If these folks can't afford this beautiful girl, I'll give them what they've paid & take her home with me because we can afford to take care of her.
The rescues I've looked at in Georgia have a $250-$500 adoption fee. The only way to get a 'free' rescue around here is to pick up a dog that's been dumped on the side of the road. It costs money to foster, and many true rescues may have medical issues that need to be tended to before they can be placed for adoption. Also, with small children, we're not 100% comfortable bringing in an adult rescue. Actually, my husband quickly & firmly put the kibosh on my rescuing any adult dog.
I'm planning on taking her in for a good once over once I pick her up, so I'll let the vet take a look at her ears while we're there. I'm not pushing the crop, certainly not if the chances of the ears standing are slim. And while natural ears are beautiful, a Dobe just doesn't look like a Dobe without a crop. But I love some floppy ears... just ask my bully dog, I'm always loving on his wrinkles & floppity ears! She'd still be super loved & spoiled even if she didn't have any ears.

Ears @ 4 months

I just had by baby's done @ 12 weeks and they r beautiful, it's hard to find an experienced vet at a reasonable price in OHIO !!! Found one, any body in OHIO need help finding someone let me know. My girl had the brace on for 10 days, then stitches out and ears wrapped for 5. They look great. Long ears are cute also, we didn't crop our first Dobs ears. So if it's too late to crop, love her the way she is !!!!

I agree with Linda, if you pay for the dog it is not from a rescue, you bought the dog. I do understand that it is sad to see this on Craigslist, but if we all refuse to give money for these dogs, they will go in rescue and not be sold with papers. Rescues will require you pay for the dog to help other dogs, not reinburse someone that bought and supported the breeder. It's a circle and maybe one day there will not be these dogs on Craigslist. I think that's the point. We do hate to see the dogs that are unwanted, but can't support this or it will continue.

There is a chance someone will take the dog and breed it and create more, but if we buy the dogs what will this do, not much in my opinion. We do rescues in our county and see it all the time. We just want to get some of our expenses back- we don't do that.
