Amount of Omega-3 in PPS Salmon & Rice?

I'm not sure if anyone has the answer to this or not, but I was wondering if anyone knows how much omega-3 the Pro Plan Selects Salmon & Brown Rice dry and canned food contains. I haven't been supplementing fish oil since I've started on this diet, considering it is salmon based, but depending on the amount in the food, I may want to start back up again.

The guaranteed analysis on the Pro Plan website says the dry Salmon/Rice contains "(min) 0.25%". What does that mean in terms of EPA mg? And there's no EPA listed for the canned food at all.

The recommended dose of omega-3 is 180mg EPA per 10 lbs, so Red (at about 80 lbs) would need 1440mg per day. Each 3V Snip Tip capsule I give him contains 540mg EPA. I just don't want to overdo it..

I thought the recommended dose was 540 DHA???

EPA and DHA are found in products in a specific ratio for bioavailability. Each 3V Snip Tip Cap contains 540mg EPA and 350mg DHA. All the dosages I've found on VIN mainly concern EPA, but you also get DHA in that ratio. The recommended dosage for DHA is 120mg/10 lbs.

Well I just got off the phone with Purina and they have no clue how many mg EPA is in their food. All they have is percentages. And considering I'm no great shakes at math, I have NO idea what these percentages mean or in what reference they are to.

oh well... I guess its a shot in the dark about adding more omega-3 supplements.

To anyone who feeds the Selects Salmon & Rice - do you still supplement w/ fish oil? Is so, how much?

I don't feed proplan, but when I feed Orijen 6 fish formula, I still give frozen salmon belly bits as treats, and I wouldn't hesitate to give him his dermatrix (a supplement of omegas) daily. but, Moonshine's skin isn't in the best of condition, so I'm doing this. if is fur/skin is as good as the other dobes here.. I wouldn't supplement.

You can compare guaranteed analysis on the proplan website - the differences are pretty negligible.

Are you supplementing for some specific skin condition? If not and you're concerned about it, you could try stopping it all together and see if you notice any difference or try a lower dose and see if there's any difference.

I don't feed Selects, Burns--just the regular ProPlan Salmon & Rice but I do suppliment with fish oil. I use the Kirkland house brand from Costco. 300 mg of Omega 3 fatty acids in a 1000 mg gel cap. EPA = 180 mg DHA = 120 mg. I give one cap morning and evening with meals.

Usually I start puppies on fish oil at about 6 months. I don't actually know how much difference it makes to coat or skin but I've done it for years and since it may have some effect on skin and coat and it's relatively inexpensive (there is no way that I'd give the 3V product--even though I think it's a good one--because of the expense--even if you are buying it at cost since you work in a clinic).

Looks like if 540 mg EPA is correct that as far as a suppliment goes I'm nowhere near the recommended amount--but where did you get the figure from?

I honestly don't see a reason not to give it as long as you aren't seeing diarrhea. It doesn't contain any fat soluble vitamins as long as it is body oil and if the body didn't need it, it would send it on through. (Logically, I don't KNOW for sure.) It's cheap enough that I just give it anyway, and W is currently on PP SS. I don't worry about it at all.
