I made the switch a few days ago... i've been through about 4 different brands of kibble now trying to find the one that both my dogs like & doesnt cause stomach upset. i thought i finally found one that i liked, that is inexpensive, and ,the dogs seemed to enjoy.

i have noticed a problem though, which is only affecting the doberman... a very stinky butt! im talking BAD dead animal smell. i guess he licks himself like all dogs do & then spreads the awful smell around. i have noticed a "smell" before but he didnt smell like roadkill,& the smell seems to really REALLY be amped up on this type of food.

has anyone else ran across this on proplan sensitive stomach? i guess i can move on to a different food, but im running out of choices @ the local petsmart!

Have you tried Orijen??

I've heard that raw meat takes care of the very bad gas that Dobies like to pass, lol.

Good luck...do look into Orijen if you want to find a better kibble :)

I was on the same food. I went through a similar experience as well. I had tried several other foods, but they all lead to horrible runny stool. The ProPlan seemed to balance it out, but the gas from the dober-butts was unbearable.
I switched about 1.5 months ago to Acana (same company as Orijen) Pacifica. We have had GREAT stools, and no gas from the food. Their coats have come back to the way they were before the pro plan (I noticed drying out and fade) and I think they have more energy than before (if that's even possible!!).
Make sure you're switching over slowly, or you'll really have problems.

your dog needs his anal glands checked.

My dog is also on Pro Plan sensitive (Salmon & Rice) but he has no such problems with smell or runny stools..As doberkim already suggested have his anal glands checked..

I want to switch my dog to another brand of kibble with less protein & fat because pro plan has 30% protein & 19% fat...Trouble is, i have a very limited choice where i live..
My choices are,
Pro Plan/Royal Canine/Hill's/Eukanuba or Bento Kronen...I know neither of these are anywhere near some of the good quality kibble sold in the states but this is my limited choice!!

thanks for the replies! im taking him in today for a vet checkup,i will make sure to have his anal glands checked too, i would also like to add that this is a seperate issue from the dobergas, which he has also. this smell, if you can believe it, is worse than the gas, which dissapates after a while, this smell sticks to everything.... in fact i cant remember smelling any dobergas since he has been on the proplan!

i am hoping its a seperate issue from the food cause its the only kibble ive tried that both my dogs like and that doesnt give runny stools...

back from the vet, it was definitley his anal glands. the vet said it was "normal" smell & it didt really have anything to do with the food..

blah! it was sooo gross, im never staying in the room if i have to get it done again...

thanks for the help!:clap_1::clap_1::clap_1:

You just haven't lived until you've got anal gland fluid on you! That stuff does not wash off easily.

Glad(?) that's what it was. Even more glad I wasn't there! Sorry...but it's true.

Anyway, since you mentioned stomach upset on the previous food, I assume you were also getting loose stools? As you find a food that agrees with him, (i.e. one that creates firmer poops) that should help with his anal glands.

When I got EvZ, he was fed Wilderness (Blue) for sensitive stomach and skin (demodex flare-ups). His stools were runny, dark and foul smelling. I switched him over to Nutro Natural Choice Herring/Rice/Potato. I fed the Blue to my other dogs (to finish the bag) and they also got runny, dark and foul stool.

I switched everybody over to the Herring kibble for the convenience factor (so as not to have to buy multiple bags of kibble) but now everybody has very soft stool--ugh! And when they defecate, they all seem to strain to get that last little bit out. I'm going to transition my other dogs back to Nutro Lamb and Rice because the soft stool is really difficult to clean up unless it has sat for about 24 hours and that's bad hygiene.

Thanks for the suggestions for "sensitive stomach & skin" kibble. I'll look into other kibble options for EvZ.:wavey:

Try the Chicken version of Pro Plan. Peaches smelled like fish on the Sensitive Stomach and her farts would make you vomit. On the Chicken the gas went away. Beef a little toot here and there..
