How to: Gently Remove Ear Posts

I have not seen this covered on DT or youtube so I wanted to do a quick how to using my method. I recommend re-taping your puppy's ears every 4 or 5 days and if they get wet they should be taken down and re-posted as soon as possible.

To start, I recommend having a tired puppy and treats on hand. After a few sessions your puppy will enjoy this and it will be very quick and easy.

To demonstrate, we have long show crop ears on a 4 month old puppy and his posts are made from backer rod and taped on with zonas tape.

You will need the following:

Unisolve adhesive remover

A few q tips

A shot glass or other small glass or metal container

Baby wipes

Begin by peeling off the tape where it is "doubled over" to expose the single layer that is wrapped over the ear leather.

Image

Go ahead and pull it off all the way up to the ear edge on each section of tape.

Image

Next, grab your shot glass and squeeze a small amount (maybe 1/4 oz.) of unisolve into the glass. You can always add more as you go. Dip your q tip in and get it nice and saturated.

Image

Begin to dab the outside of the tape with the q tip soaked in unisolve. Get it nice and saturated. You will need to keep dipping in the shot glass and rubbing the q tip on the outside of the tape.

You can now pull off the zonas tape- it will almost fall off. I start with the middle piece, then the top piece, then do the bottom piece last.

Image

If there's an area where the tape is still stuck, gently work the soaked q tip between the tape and ear leather as you peel the tape back.

Image

Now, gently work the q tip under the ear post to loosen the ear.

Pull out the post.

Give your pup some lovin' and a treat or two.

Repeat the post removal on the other side. Clean his ears out with baby wipes or similar. If there is excess wax you may need to use q tips.

Now you're all done! You can admire his ears for a few minutes while you prepare your new posts. You really only want to leave the ears unposted for a half hour at most.

Ace will lay there fine to be posted (as long as my SO is petting him, if not he tries eating everything).

But when it comes to removal, he just throws a tempertantrum.

I got the Unisolve Wipes, and I will say they are not as good. They don't stay wet very long, and certainly don't soak the tape enough to make it easier.

Thanks for posting your method!
I've never tried the wipes but the plain liquid makes easy work of removing the posts without taking off much hair.

Also, could I possibly use Vet Wrap ? That stuff is easy to remove, without the sticky residue. Just wondering...
Avoid vet wrap since it's elastic. Cloth tape is the best bet- Johnson and Johnson athletic tape if you can't get Zonas tape. Zonas and Unisolve are really hard to find other than online.
