I know nothing about metamucil and dogs.. ask your vet???
I would try pumpkin before anything else and see if that works.

 

I use pumpkin for firming up stools, have used metamucil at my vets instruction when Grace was young and had the habit of swallowing small rocks, kept everything moving, and I just gave her 2 tsp in the morning.

Are you using actually pumpkin in a can or pumpkin pie filling, the filling contains lots of spices and will make them sick to their tummies. Using oatmeal or oats normally helps as well to firm things up

 

I've always used wheat bran (the stuff in the green box for muffins) provided your dog doesn't have a wheat allergy and one tablespoon per meal and voila firm normal poops ! My vet put me onto the wheat bran for loose runny poops for my gang yrs ago.

I saw a vet on TV giving a horse psyllium. I know psyllium is a lot better than metamucil for people...(cough, cough....ahem)

 

Just curious what are a few of the foods you tried?

 

Scout had a history of colitis. We gave her a scant teaspoon of metamucil* with each meal (make sure you add water to it) at our vet's recommendation. Worked great. She was also on a low residue diet.

Our senior rescue guy Foster gets the same (metamucil), in addition to a teaspoon of pumpkin. He came to us with colitis, hasn't had a flareup in 6 months.

That's in addition to probiotics 1x/daily.

*We use the original texture natural fiber powder (no flavorings), 100% natural psyllium.

 

I use the metamucil that is 100 % psyllium coarse milled unflavored. No effect so far teaspoon with each meal mixed with water. I have had him on Innova, Cal. Nat., Canidae, and a few others that escape me. He also gets probiotics and is currently on cal.nat. I bought some Chicken soup large breed today to start mixing in and see. Has a higher fiber content. He was on diamond when i got him as a puppy and was the only time he had firm stools, all the corn i'm sure.
