Found Deer Bones safe?

We found a dead deer carcass on the back of the property today on our walk. Most all of the meat is gone, but the legs are still intact. We’re discussing whether to saw the cannon bones and hocks apart for our dogs. I’m concerned about disease from whatever animals chewed on it so far. My guess is coyotes, rodents, birds and possibly even wolves.

Our temperature high today is 14 degrees fahrenheit, and the low will be – 8. We haven’t gotten above 25 in the last week.

Does this kind of deep freeze kill bacteria? Does anyone have any experience with this type of thing?

I’m not going to go get the bones until I hear from someone here. Just too risky if I don’t know, but on the other hand, what a find if it’s safe!

I don't think that I would give them the bones if wild animals have been chewing on them, even if they have been in a deep freeze for several weeks. I've threatened my family that I'm going to start doing real whole prey model raw feeding, get on the police road kill list and pick up a deer, just leave it in the backyard all winter for Petey to eat at his leisure!!!

Thanks everyone, I won't go get the deer bones. Too bad, but I'm sure you're right. If we did that, Sora might as well go out and French Kiss all the varmints around here! hahahah

What a wonderful idea! We’d have to bundle them up so they could stay out for a half hour at a time, and eventually we should think of silver tooth caps to protect the teeth from chipping. Would you be leaving the eyeballs in? hehe

I agree with not giving them as you dont know what has been on them that might have diseases, The only way I would think about it was if I took the bones and boiled them to kill bacteria, but then that is really going against what your trying to do as a whole.

But that would be an awesome find for the Dobes.
Maybe if you know anyone who hunts you could put in a request for the carcas when their done with it. just an idea.

I'm a HUGE deer hunter so my dogs get deer every hunting season, I just cut out the tendor loins/hams (for myself) and sometimes the intestines/stomach (messy and you never know what the deer has ingested)... they just love it! I wouldn't give them one I found that was previously knawled on by something but the ones I kill or fresh road kill I do. I would check with the local DNR to make sure CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease) isn't prone to your area or to make sure that there hasn't been any recent cases, in some areas it's becoming a big problem in hooved animal populations and could probably be passed on to dogs.

LOL .. I did it for you since I was interested in the topic too Stone Hill :biggrin55:- Chronic Wasting Disease for Illinois

That being said, I know the northern states have a ton more issues with deer than we have in Texas {Hill Country especially} so there are state management actions for the populations on top of what the hunters get each year. You might even ask the Fish & Wildlife agency in your State where to get the ones they kill via their management quota & where they are taken to be disposed of. Maybe contract/purchase from the disposal company. I'm sure the state will test for CWD regardless of what's done with the carcass.

Luvbirds, do you have a Low ROPES course in your backyard?!

Four very active sons, not a lot of money, daddy was a builder .....presto...home made jungle gym! We also have snowboard rails and a ramp, and living so close to Mt. Creek....we have actually had a couple of professional snowboarders here on snowy nights entertaining us with rail tricks!!! Also a rock climbing wall in the garage, a trampoline now in the attic, too dangerous once they started jumping out of second floor windows on to it.....my life was INSANITY a few short years ago...oh that's right, it still is....I'm just older and forgetting!

Yeah, one year my dog brought home six different legs--not sure how many deer they represented. One of the legs reeked so bad I could smell it when I opened the door a good 40 feet away. Even triple bagged and in the trash I had to put the garbage can outside the garage (don't normally, bears). And her breath!!!!!!!
