Flying a Puppy

So, another noob question...

As I look more and more at pups, it becomes more and more apparent to me that I'm gonna have to get on an airplane at some point (most likely). I hate airplanes with a passion, but I also hate driving more than 10 hours (plus, that's dangerous, given that my "wakeup meds" only last 8 or so hours at a time).

So, question. If I ended up flying home with a puppy, how much should I be budgeting? What airlines do you recommend? What are the guidelines? I looked at Southwest, and they only talked about in-cabin pets... unless I'm getting a Dobe that's too young to be taken from its mom, I just don't see in-cabin being an option. :lol2:

Some people have had in-cabin work for them. I don't know any details about it other than there's a weight limit. It would certainly be my preference if I could make it work.

My breeder preferred to handle the flight arrangments as there were specific requirements she wanted met. So...I have no clue what the airline guidelines were. I just knew to be at the airport at a specific time.

Teddy flew to me from LaGuardia airport in New York to Dallas with no issues whatsoever.

The only limiting factor was the weather because most companies will not fly a dog as "cargo" if it's going to be too hot or cold during departure or arrival. The cargo part of the plane is pressurized and climate controlled, but they worry about temperature extremes during loading/unloading and transporting the "cargo" to the pick up area. Teddy had to catch an early morning flight because it was supposed to be close to 100*F later in the day. When he arrived, I think it was around 83*F.

Flirt was flown to me on Continental. At 10 weeks, she was too big to fly in the cabin. I think 5 years ago it was about $350.

To fly in the cabin, there isn't a weight limit per se. The dog has to fit in a pet bag of a specific size that will fit under the seat. An 8 week old Vizsla just barely fit. I can't imagine a Dobe fitting.

Contintenal merged with United, United Airlines - Traveling with animals and they are the best for dogs for domistic air travel. I just sent a few boys to their new homes, in the west coast from the east coast, it was $257 including taxes (up to 51lbs),....... plus you need a #300 size crate $90, the water bowls $10 for the crate doors, and a health cert from your vet(about $45) VIDEO0107.mp4 video by feverhaus - Photobucket

I've heard lots of success stories with people having their dogs flown up to them, but if you are going to go that route just be sure you know an awful lot about what you are getting shipped to you, and the breeder you are dealing with. I almost made a terrible mistake attempting that. But I do know some reputable breeders are willing to ship.

Sounds like you really want to be there and truly pick out your own in person though, which is totally commendable.
