Well, just wondered if you guys can help me out. I keep my D-bone outside while we are at work..but bring him in when I get home and at night..(the landlord will not allow me to have him inside..so I "let" him in even though Im not supposed to..(I LUB HIM) ) anywhoo...I noticed yesterday he had a dry nose on the top...here is a pic.

Could this be due to me taking him in and out so much? or is there anything I can moisture his little nose with ? Thanks!

Well, Dobermans are not outside dogs. They are not very tolerant of temperature extremes and they are far too home oriented to be left outside. Some breeds you can do this with but not the Doberman. As for the nose, I dont really know - it could be dry or burnt skin from the sun but that is my only guess. He is a handsome boy btw.

Im sure you love your dog very much and want the best for him and I also know that everybody is at different places when it comes to knowing the breed. I dont want to be offensive here but please, please try if you can to arrange something different for the sake of your dog. This is such an unacceptable situation for the Doberman breed. If nothing else, you can crate him inside and see to it that he gets let out by a friend or neighbor once during the day - but you are in a bad situation with the landlord, I know. Let us know on both counts, how things develop.

SUre! I completely understand. Weather here in San Antonio hardly gets below 45 , usually at 68 degrees on avg. ANd YES, If its cold for me Im sure its Cold for my D-bone. I hope my landlord gives us a break too...I want him inside too, I do have a crate ..but think he has outgrown it some so I think I will head out and find a bigger one.

All my guys are kept inside, the weather is to crazy here in SA. Also puppy thefts apparently have been on the rise. *that* would upset me!! Suppose to get to 32 degrees sometime this next week. Doggie day care may be a good idea. I actually moved and bought a house because I was tired of apt life for my dogs (that and my car kept getting broken into) Got a little house with a big back yard and a garage. hehe.

Not only are Dobes not outside dogs, but their coats are thin, and reds (and fawns and blues) are even more susceptible to sunburn and tender skin... so since their noses are pretty naked, it could be "exposure" - sun, heat, cold, wind, dry - whatever. Try putting moisturizing sun screen on it, though he might lick or paw it off - and really, do find a better situation for D-bone... Dobermans should not be left outside, even with an insulated doghouse. They simply aren't outside dogs like German Shepherds, Huskies, Labs, Collies, etc. can be. Lois
