Dog Signs?

My wife seems to think it would be a good idea to get a beware of dog sign or something like that for our yard when our little guy gets older. He is really friendly and nice and probably would lick you to death before biting you. Anyways, any ideas on where to get a good doberman one? I would like a really nice one, maybe even a metal one. Something that looks better than the typical red sign with fangs.

Very well put! By putting a big "beware of dog sign" up you could be asking for unwanted trouble in the future. Or you could find a cute one like "I love my Dobe" or "Doberman crossing" or something like that. Then you are still letting people know you have a dog at home. :)

I perfer the sign below :cwmddd: Just kiddin' I have a dog on premises. If someone that I don't know comes over to the house and sees how gentle and friendly she is and makes a comment referring to her. I always reply back with yea but she's a different dog when we aren't around. It makes them think twice.

I actually have that sign on my fence, only its a GSD on it. as well as a beware of dog sign, I know in our area, having one actually helps you out if someone comes in your yard or home and is bitten, you have forwarned that the dog will bite if they intrude onto your property, I was told by a lawyer I train with that its a good idea, I also have Caution K-9 on the back of my SUV, for training as well as the lawyer friend I train with has beware of dog dont touch, on his actual crates in his suv.

I've heard things go both ways, but I personally don't know for sure so I would check what the laws are in your area. Anyways, one story is if you have a BOD sign it means your are admitting that you have a potentially dangerous dog and if something would happen (someone gets bit on your property) that you are liable since you were "aware" the dog was a hazard. On the flip side I've heard that with the sign, you are giving a fair warning, so if someone comes in your yard and gets bit, it's there fault since the warning was present...

But like I said, I'm not sure which way it goes where you live, so it's worth looking into...you don't want someone that's uninvited getting bit only to sue you because of a piece of plastic attached to your fence.

I have heard what country girl posted, the sign means you know your dog is potentially dangerous. I have a Dobe inside decal on my front door, if some one gets that close without knowing the dogs are here! my van also has a sticker on the back, doberman pinschers on board. I got both off of ebay.

Our insurance Agent advised against using a "beware of dog" or any sign like that because by doing so you can potentially be seen as being "aware of a potentially aggressive or dangerous animal" She did say there was no problem with a sign stating "Dogs on premises" or a vague sign letting others know Going in to retrieve a ball would not be the best Idea. I would consult with an insurance agent or attorney familiar with law of that nature in your state If you want to know the best option for you!

I have several signs up that are custom made by my step daughter - letters burned into wood and nicely varnished with marine varnish. The words are courtesy of Bonnie Wittrock (who also sells signs for your gates):

Dogs on Premises
Do NOT Enter

I got these signs done in response to a dog being shot in Florida when police entered the backyard and the dog came out the back dogdoor - he had just had spinal surgery and was shaven and moving very slowly but they killed him anyway. The Police were in the wrong backyard and, therefore, were not expecting a dog to be there.
