I've never had any problems getting my girl to drink water. She loves it, but she likes it fresh. I fill the bowl for the little Princess multiple times a day!

+1 on liking it fresh.

No issues with her drinking....Shannon always drinks after play, walks and treats.

But when our princess is feeling especially bitchy she will only drink directly from the water bottles being poured into her bowl. She gets filtered of course, us humans drink the cheap stuff from the tap

 

I have had that issue with mine at various times. I find if I tell them to get some water and go stand beside their water while they think about it, they usually will. They dont want to miss anything !

 

I've had to tell my boxer to get water after she's played or walked for a while. Jordan drinks plenty without me having to tell him, but he only usually drinks after excessive play or exercise. I think with a raw diet they drink less than the fosters I get her on kibble. They drink like crazy.

 

I've got several of those fountains that filter the water. The dogs and cats seem to like them.

 

Perrin drinks a good amount of water, but Guilty is a water brat. She only likes "her" water from the bowl at home, so I have to ask her to drink when we are out. I often carry a spray bottle full of water to spray into her mouth.

 

Thank you for the replies ! I think I have a "water brat" too It could be an issue of it not being "her water". I guess I could try taking some water from home and see how it goes. She won't drink if i tell her to - she just sniffs it and turns away. It can be quite stressful when she has just done an hour or so of running and I know she needs it.

 

I've never had an issue getting Odin to drink water. Getting him to swallow that last gulp is a different story...he likes to hold it in his mouth and then deposit it on his closest victim. My little sisters actually try and hide when they hear him drinking. After a long walk or hard play, he will sometimes wait until he catches his breath/cools down, but he eventually will go get a drink. You might also try giving her "treats" that will rehydrate her. One of Odin's favorite treats is watermelon. It's great during the summer when he needs a little extra water.

 

Stella will usually drink just fine but has her moments when she wants it from a squirt bottle or I have to put ice cubes in it so she has something to play with. I give her frequent watermelon treats as well. She's recently gotten fixated on trying to drink from the toilet. :rolleyesww:

 

oh man the cubes remind of me poppy... poppy is a water shark. if its in a big bucket she will dunk her head and bite deep into the bucket. she normally goes to her eyes but occasionally will dunk her whole head. if its in the bowl, she drags her tongue across the bottom of the bowl. she also bobs for ice cubes in her water. her ice cube obsession got me getting a juicer and juicing cantaloupe, pears and apples and freezing them in ice cube trays. she chomps the spray from sprinklers as well

i dont know if its a regional thing. but i put a drop of essential oil peppermint (doterra or be young brand) into the bowls to give it just a tad of smell and taste

 

Jaina-belly is not picky at all. I actually have issues with her drinking "too much" and making herself sick... I give it to her out of one of those travel things now so that a) she doesn't spill it everywhere and b) drinks it throughout the day instead of in one sitting.

 

Try adding a bit of Gatorade or something else to sweeten it.
My old boy used to only drink fresh water, but he eventually got over it when I stopped catering to him.
Or soak treats in water.

 

I never have issues convincing Beau to drink. He goes after the water bowl like a dehydrated camel and comes away from it dripping and drooling all over his nearest victim (usually our old cat Drooly). The only water snob in our house is Fluffy the cat (we're creative with names). He only drinks out of a water glass, and only if I just poured it for myself.

I never thought about the Gatorade trick, but that's an interesting idea.

 

At my house, they like their water fresh. We have 5 dogs and 2 communal bowls, 1 upstairs and one downstairs. Whenever the contents get dumped and refilled its a mad dash to the bowls.

I always take water from home for the dogs when I travel. Our water comes from a well so probably tastes a lot different than city water. Kris drinks lots of water and also slops it all over the floor. I use to walk around in my socks but have to put slippers on now or end up with wet feet.

 

Hero won't drink water when he's really hot. He waits until he cools down a little before he will. I really am grateful for this because I hear gulping down a lot of water when over-heated can be one of the things that causes bloat. But when he's relaxed for awhile, I can hear him drinking in the other room.

 

We keep fresh water inside and outside. Zoot drinks a lot, but way too much ends up on the kitchen floor to suit my wife. During hot weather he loves ice cubes.

 

Our boy loves his water, but not Maiya. I make sure that the water bowl is clean and she has fresh water available - just to encourage her to drink. When we are tracking or out in hot weather, I squirt water into the side of her mouth with a squirt bottle. At home, I add a little water to her kibble so I know that she has had something to drink at least a few times a day. On the other hand, if she is outside playing with the sprinkler or hose, I have to be careful that she doesn't drink TOO much water. Hmmm. Never thought of that. Maybe it's the method of delivery she doesn't like.

 

+1 on raw fed dogs drinking less, and ++1 on being picky about fresh bowls. Princess Rowan will turn his nose up at a bowl if he has deposited his own slobbery mouth in it and contaminated the supply. He will wait for a fresh bowl even if he is very hot.

 

My friend has a husky that will barely drink any water at all. She constantly gives her dog ice cubes throughout the day to keep the dog busy and to sneak a little water in there. However, I'm not sure if this is good for the teeth......
