The kiddos are as healthy as they can be and with the Valium, the doctors see no reason why we can't work them. It's always been my dream to do something with my dogs and finally in Soter and Coco I have two high drive, willing to work dogs.

My problem is that I live in the middle of nowhere, the closest training clubs I can find are a two day drive away. I'm trying on my own to learn how to track, I have books and been visiting websites but I'm kind of floundering here.

I stumbled across the Fenzi Dog Sports website and they offer online training in tracking starting at the basics. It almost sounds too good to be true. Has anyone taken any of their courses or know anything about them beyond what's on their site.

It's kind of a lofty goal but I would like to work towards a CKC tracking certification.

I've done courses on there, and had friends do them. Brilliant courses, absolutely recommend them. The gold level courses are quite expensive but I think they would be good value for someone like you that does not have regular club access as you will have an experienced person keeping an eye on what you're doing.

Thanks guys, those were the responses I was hoping to hear! I showed the site to my husband and all your replies and he's totally on board.

I think I'll take your advice Discowhore and take the gold level. It does seem like the best choice as there are no clubs anywhere near and I really have only a very basic understanding of what I'm doing.

I'm very lucky, I have a small education fund set aside. I was thinking of changing jobs for a while so I was looking into new job skills and had put aside some money towards that end. Then out of the blue, after 7 years of working there, they started a pension plan, a medical/dental plan, gave me a raise and my first ever bonus (a pretty good one too). So it looks like I'll be staying a while. I think this will be putting the money to good use, I can't think of anything I want to do more and I never thought I'd ever have the chance.

Registration for the level one tracking is March 22 and the course starts in April. I'm so excited, this is better than Christmas :D

i took the tracking classes at the bronze level - i am trying to see if i can do it gold this time around for her to comment on my tracking. my biggest issue is going to be having the time to dedicate to doing the exercises and getting them video taped for her!!!

Hey Doberkim, do you mind if I pm you with a few questions about the course?

I'm a bit concerned about time as well. I have a couple of other activities I'm not that attached to though so I can resign from something else if I have to.

I'm also a bit worried about finding a suitable location to track on. The only places we have around here are mowed public fields, gravel school yards or forest :(

Oh thank you Disco, that's one worry off my mind. I read this on the site and I was starting to worry.

"Try to find someplace with grass about ankle height, not too short (i.e. closely mowed lawn) nor too long (I.e. Hayfield)."

Another question if you don't mind. I've been taking him out every Sat. and Sun. to track. But like I said, I really don't know if I'm doing this right or not. Should I keep at it or would I be better off just waiting until the course starts. I don't want to teach him the wrong things or ruin it for him or anything like that.

I don't know where you live/what it's like... But here if you drive a little bit into the country there are grass verges alongside paddocks which tend to have longish grass. Some of the forests I use will have big grassy patches by the carpark... But yeah I don't drive so I only used that sort of place when I had someone to drive me! Most of my early training was on empty house lots or at the park (if the weather is a bit wet they can't mow so it gets pretty long then!). I found tracking early in the morning in winter good too, as you can see where you walked through the frost/dew at the park if no one else goes through.

I personally would keep going, because I am very impatient :) Do you use food when tracking? And does that course use food?

Unfortunately there in no country where we live, literally. We live on an island that is mostly peat moss, no farms, no pastures, in fact hoofed animals are not allowed on the island as they get hoof rot. Same reason why there are no farms, it's too wet to grow anything. The island is mostly dense rain forest, beautiful to live in, not so great for finding tracking spots :(

We mow our lawns in the rain, we average around 100 inches of rain in a year so we can do pretty much anything in the rain! We joke that we can never leave because we'd lose our webbed feet!

Yes! At least one thing I'm doing right. We use hotdogs and the course says they use hotdogs too YEA!

I'd love to continue, we have a lot of fun. As long as I'm not going to scar him for life or anything (mostly kidding)

I do most of our tracking in city parks. I'm very lucky to have several large parks that are usually pretty vacant during the week, which is when we go out.
