Cost? NY Breeders

Hello,

I am looking for a doberman. Rescue/Pup. I am in Upstate NY, but would be willing to travel within reason.

Anyone know of quality breeders in the area?

Cost- How much is a normal fee for a quality doberman? One breeder told me $2600, I thought that was high.

Thank you

Depends on the breeder. Most in NY and New England seem to charge $1800-2800 for companion puppies on average (show prospects $2500-3000+).

I'd be REALLY WARY of 'breeders' selling pups for much less, for a number of reasons (ie: to sell pups for a lower cost, you have to wonder if they are skimping on health testing or other veterinary care of pups or parents).

Definitely not an inexpensive breed to purchase. If cost is a factor, considering a Rescue dobe is definitely a wonderful idea. Just keep in mind, since they are generally not bred by responsible individuals, their origins and potential health/temperament issues may be unknown.

So, think long about what it is you want in a Dobe. There are pros and cons to both going the Breeder route or Rescue route, and that's up for you to decide. But if you are going to go with a breeder, make sure it is a RESPONSIBLE one! Check DPCA | Home for referrals.

Welcome to the forum. You will find that reputable breeders generally charge more for their puppies than what you see in the newspaper or on puppy selling websites. That said, you can expect to pay in the ballpark of $1500-$2500 for a well bred companion quality puppy from a reputable breeder. While the price might seem high, breeders are lucky to break even on any particular breeding. The cost of titling and health testing the dam, paying the stud fee, and having the puppies ears cropped adds up pretty quickly. Also, in my opinion you can't put a price on the ongoing support and advice you will receive from a reputable breeder before and after you take possession of a puppy. Have you contacted the local doberman club in your area to find out about upcoming litters? The DPCA breeder referral page on dpca.org lists several breeders in your area. Good luck with your breeder search.

Doberman Rescue Unlimited

That is one of the dobermann rescue organizations in New York. The breeder I've chosen is in New York as well. I know she charges at the higher end of the price scale for a show quality pup, but I'm willing to pay what she asks because I'm 100% confident that her dogs are worth every last dime. There are plenty of good breeders in and around the New York/Pennsylvania area:

Dancing Star, Cha Rish has produced some lovely dogs, Fitzmar, Triadel (all in PA), and there's Bell'lavoro, Cara, Kalora, and Rauschund in NY. All breeders that have been praised here in previous threads.

The previous posters are correct with the price scale. Usually a pet/companion puppy on limited registration with a spay/neuter contract will cost you between $1500-$2000. The Dobermann is by no means a healthy breed. The number of diseases and illnesses in this breed make it not only an expensive one to own, but also an expensive one to breed if you're doing things correctly. If you don't think that the price is worth paying, you could always give a home to a Dobermann in need through a rescue organization such as DRU. There are always dobes in need of a home, and rescues put a lot of time and effort into each dog that comes through their doors. They will temperament test the animals, to see if they are fit to live around children, other dogs or cats etc, and they can usually help you find a perfect fit for your home and lifestyle. :)

Good luck :)

If you are willing to look at a rescue and DVDPA would place in that area (neither of which I know would be possible, but it is something to ask about) there is the litter of 6 month old male puppies that DVDPA has in rescue...

Some very good breeders have already been mentioned, but there are tons of dobermans waiting for good home in rescue.

Distinguished Dobermans do adoptions in the NY area, I live in Rochester, NY and foster for them on a regular basis. Right now we have a little male pup up for adoption right now he is currently being treated for mange but once he's well he is going to make someone a fantastic pet.

I've been looking for a doberman as well and just astounded by the prices. I'm looking at healthy working lines and most are at or above $2500.

I guess it's shocking to me since my friend recently bought a malinois from knpv lines for about the half the price. Granted there are no papers but I believe most working malinois have no papers since they are mixed. BUT my heart is set on a doberman, not an alligator with fur. lol So time to make some sacrifices (you'd be amazed how much you waste once you start keeping track!)

Really depends on the breed, as different breeds require different health testing etc. In my other breed Italian Greyhounds, $800-1200 is average price for a companion puppy.

There's a working dog program in Holland, KNPV, that uses a lot of malinois, but mixes them with other breeds.

I haven't been involved with malinois in almost 20 years. At that time it was possible to obtain purebred mals. However, the best came from Belgium, and they weren't always AKC registerable. Not because they were mixed breed, but because there were a number of different registries in Belgium, and the AKC only recognizes one registry per country.

Thank you for everyones info and tips. I believe a dobe that is past some of the basic puppy stages but still young will best suit us. With that being said I think locating a rescue dog or a dog available that meets that criteria will be the next task. We prefer a black DOB.

If anyone has any info on Dobes that would fall under those described details please let me know.

Thank you
Mike
