Blue Buffalo vs. Pro Plan (for puppy)

I've been bouncing back and forth between which food I want to start the pup on once we get her.

The breeder is feeding her Iams Large Breed Puppy, but we plan on switching her over to either Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy or Pro Plan Large Breed Puppy.

I saw in another thread that a lot of people recommend Pro Plan Selects for their dogs but it seems that Purina does not make Pro Plan Selects dry puppy food; just the regular Pro Plan variety.

It looks like Blue Buffalo has the higher quality ingredients, but I'm just not too sure if it's worth the premium over Pro Plan Large Puppy.

Anyone have any experience with the Pro Plan or Blue Buffalo large puppy foods?

Yes, Pro Plan Selects has a puppy formula - its turkey & barley. There is also an adult turkey & barley. A lot of experienced Dobe people on the board feed regular adult food to their pups and don't feed a puppy formula at all.

Trying Pro Plan starting tomorrow

We just FINALLY decided on Pro Plan Selects--It is a Dry Puppy formula--with Turkey. I have gone around & around and it seems that many have had great success with the Pro Plan--and after laying them all out side by side--looking at all ingredients.. we finally just picked Pro Plan (over Innova) They are All VERY similar to me--one is 2% more protein or 1 % less fat, etc... I think it all comes down to what agrees with your dog the most.
My husband said lets go with the Pro Plan over Innova, because of the cost, if it works.. then lets use the cheaper. BUT after looking closer, at the lbs/bag--we figured out the ProPlan select was actually more $ then Innova.
I'm sorry, i'm sure i'm not much help. I have heard good things about Blue Buffalo. But I will certainly let you know how Pro Plan works out for us over the next week or so.
Good luck!

Most adult foods, especially the premium brands, have a very high protein and fat content, a la Innova EVO, which is not advisable for a growing puppy. A lot of commercial "all life stages" or "adult" foods are lower in proteins and fat content, so they are more suitable for a growing puppy if that is the route one chooses to go.

We have never fed any type of "puppy" food to any of our dogs, as most commercial, and even premium brands, are fine for a puppy as well.

I raise my puppies on Pro Plan growth formula. One of my puppy owners from last summer's litter tried to switch to Blue Buffalo and it didn't go well at all. Upset tummy, upset bowels, etc. It's like I told the owners, it's a good food. It just wasn't good for her.

I live in Florida, the vanity capital of the world, and I have friends that live off of Sunkist, Mountain Dew, and McDonalds, and they are tall, lean, and ripped to the T. I have friends who wake up at 5 AM to cycle, and go to the gym 2 hours a day everyday, and it seems to make no difference. They're both the same.

I say feed your dog whatever he or she seems to like, and does well on, regardless of all of the hype.

Seems like it depends on the pup, then.

We're going to start her off on Blue Buffalo for Large Breed Puppies and then go from there.

On their site there is a link that lets you compare foods...these are the results between Pro Plan and Blue Buffalo.

Just an FYI---I think this comparison is between Blue Buffalo & Reg. Pro Plan--NOT "PP Selects formula"--The Selects formula has a lot more of the "good things" in it, like other premium brands.

My MIL just told me that she has been feeding her Golden Retriever blue Buffalo & loves it--that being said, I know that her dog has a lot of allergies & is on Prednisone as well.... all the food research I've been doing, makes me wonder...

good luck--as everyone has said... I think its up to the individual dog..

Yeah, it just compares against regular Pro-Plan.

We were hoping to hear from people who have used both...

We're leaning towards Blue Buffalo (although Pro-Plan Selects is more readily available), but we still have two weeks to decide. :)

Compare the first six ingredients in Blue vs. Pro Plan. Wheat and corn in the Purina product caused allergic skin problems in our male. When we switched to Blue, the problems disappeared. I think wheat and corn are a source of food allergies in our Dobes that many have yet to discover for themselves. Our Dobes currently eat Blue Buffalo products. We are thinking of switching to raw.

When we adopted Zak my daughter's chihuahua, he had hairloss, dry skin and was very thin. The people surrendered him because he was "failing to thrive". I fed him blue buffalo puppy until he was a little over a year. Zak did wonderful on the food and he really enjoyed it. His fur grew back and is in good condition. I really like blue buffalo but I like some of the pro plan formulas also. My Mastiff eats the salmon Sen. skin and stomach. I think if you go with either you'll do fine. My new Dobe pup is on the pro plan turkey and barley ( he is still at the breeders).

My parents and I both switched to Blue Buffalo. My dog had always been a picky eater, sometimes going a day or two w/o eating. We had tried Nutro lamb and rice then ScienceDiet lanb and rice and chicken and rice. We just believed it was her eating habits. Well since switching to BB she rarely skips a meal. My parents were feeding EVO to their 3pitbulls and a chihuahua then switched to BB due to cost and availability. The young female pitbull has bad allergic outbreaks sometimes, so after reading some posts I recommended PP sen skin/stomach salmon and rice to my mom. However, her allergies got worse while on the PP and my mom also complained that the PP smelled like cat food. :damn: So she was promptly put back on BB.

Thanks for the advice, everyone.

We decided on Blue Buffalo and are in the process of switching her over from Iams Large Breed Puppy.

As of now she has flaky skin and she scratches a lot, but we hope to see that go away once we start feeding her a higher percentage of Blue Buffalo.

Travis, is there a chance you could take, and send to me, a picture of Athena's dry skin? I am wondering if it might be the same as what Darmah has. The breader was feeding her a mix up PP but we have since switched her over to Science Diet puppy formula. I'm also interested to see what results you have when you switch over to BB.

PLEASE re-examine Pro Plan
Blue Buffalo is a hundred times better then Pro Plan.
Go to Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble
This site will truly break down each food and why it's a good or bad food!
The best rating Pro Plan got (that I could find) was a 2 Star food that's horrible!!
Quality food effects every part of your dog's health, coat and life. If you can't feed completely raw find a EXCELLENT dry food. And this site can point you in that direction.

Pro Plan?? or Pro Plan SELECTS? just curious. We have notice great improvement, with the ProPlan Selects over the Candidae Jasper was on--but I still think we need something a little better--his skin is still Dry. But its only been 3 weeks--so we're giving it a little more time, b4 we switch him again.

go with blue buffalo. my friends just switched their dogs to this from pro plan and they already seem to be so much better from the last time I saw these dogs. coats look better, seem to have more energy, etc. even pro plan selects still has corn in the first four ingredients and unidentified "animal fat". No thanks.
