Just wanted to ask opinions on the benefits of joining the various Dobe breed clubs around the country.

Just getting into showing Jax and he has done quite well so far. The breeder is really helping us both and I have joined a couple of ring classes to up my experience. We got best male puppy at The Doberman Club open show and I am keen to get him into a few more shows.

I am however starting to realise how clicky this showing is and don't want to suddenly find I have "gone over to the dark side" by joining the "wrong" club.

While most owners I have met so far have been friendly genuine people, I have come across a few who were just short of being rude when they found out who Jax was.

I am eager to hear the opinions and experiences of others on this.

I don't know what kind of setup you have for clubs where you are, in England. Here we have the Doberman Pinscher Club of America, which is the parent club for the breed in this country. It writes and owns the doberman standard used in the AKC conformation ring. Benefits to DPCA membership would be getting to vote on standard changes, being able to futurity nominate your litters.

We also have DPCA chapter clubs which exist under the DPCA umbrella. These are smaller clubs spread around the country. They put on dog shows, do some public education. Some chapter clubs also are involved in rescue, although not all.

I belong to the DPCA, but in 20 years of owning dobermans and being active in this breed, have never joined a chapter club, due to lack of interest. Too much squabbling, too many situations where one faction literally takes over a club.

Seems to be the same which ever side of the pond, I think for the moment I will stick with just the national club and wait until I have attended some more regional club shows before joining anything else.

The South West Doberman Club has a champ show in November so I will go to that, hopefully with a handler because he plays about when I handle him, and just see what the feeling is.
