Town Hall Topic - Do you let your doberman……

Here's a fun one to see how spoiled our dobies are. My bet is that they are....

Do you let your doberman……

• Sleep in your bed with you? Do they sleep on top or under the covers? When did they first start sleeping in the bed? Or do they have their own bed?
• Sit/sleep on your furniture? Do they have their favorite piece of furniture? How many have leather couches? When did you first ley them sit on the furniture?

TracyJo 01-02-2006 03:37 PM

Try as I might to keep her off the furniture (that last picture I posted was very damnimg evidence :-), Chi is allowed on the furniture. Generally, who ever she is sitting with is very uncomfortabley squished into one position and can not move for fear of "disturbing the baby".
I'm holding my ground on the bed thing though :-) A few nights ago, I tried to let her sleep out of her crate. Like the angel that she is, she quickly found her bed (a bean bag chair) on the floor next to my side of the bed. She made her spot and fell asleep. I thought we had achieved a major break through until I woke up around 2 am with back spasms and her asleep on top of me. Needless to say, Chi is back in her kennel at night :-)
But as spoiled as she is when it comes to the living room furniture, she is only allowed up by invite. This rule must be strictly enforced because she has the very bad habit of pouncing (with all four feet) on the sofa and whoever just happens to be on it at the time. She will generally jump on it, one of us will chase her off and make her sit or down/stay for a minute or two and then invite her up.
Her favorite piece of furniture is whatever piece I happen to be sitting on. I swear I could be curled up in the chair and Mark can have the HUGE couch all to himself. Every critter wants to be on the chair with me. We have to bribe them to move over to the sofa.
We will buy new furniture before we leave here and have decided to buy two couches this time, rather than the standard one couch and a love seat or chair :-)

Lexus 01-02-2006 03:47 PM

Well, for starters I didn't allow any of the animals on the couch. I've stuck by my own rule with all of them except Lexus.... <no seriously I don't play favorites!!> She was about a year old before I caved and let her up, but like Chi, she is ONLY allowed up by invite. And only myself or my husband invite her, kids do not. Generally she will never "ask" my husband if she can come on the couch, but me...all the time:) we sit on separate couches. I only let her up in the evening when we settle down to watch tv, and lately I have moved her bed out into the living room and have been making her relax on that instead. So she only gets on the couch every now and then now. I have a fabric couch and never let her up without a blanket under her either, our next couch will be leather so I won't worry about snags so much.

As for the bed, just twice I allowed it and will NEVER again!!!! I have never been forced to sleep in such a small area!! I don't like dogs in bed with me anyway, but it was an especially chilly night and we have hardwood floors in the bedroom, of course her bed is in there, but it was still really chilly, and the poor neglected doberman was shivering and absolutely BEGGING to get up! How could I say no?

Luv_my_Bruno 01-02-2006 04:03 PM

Bruno has his own bed in our bedroom. We let him sleep with us a few times. But with him and Oscar (cat) and my husband and I. It doesn't leave much room lol. So Bruno is back to his bed ;)

He's also allowed on the couches. He sleeps on both and sit son both. So not sure which one I'd say is his favourite. Generally he's where ever my husband and I are sitting. Sometimes will sit with one of my boys while they're watching tv :)

1. Yes, I have to admit, they sleep on the bed. We bought a King size bed specifically for that reason! We got Darmok when she was 7 1/2 weeks old and she was just so tiny and cute we didnt want her anywhere except right beside us! She slept on the pillows between my wife and I for about a year, and has since moved her favorite sleeping spot to under the covers at the foot of the bed--well, across my feet most of the time. I dont mind that at all--she doesnt hinder my movements when I need to turn over, and she is a great foot warmer!! Sasha used to sleep in the living room in a chair and she liked that--she had the 'sentenel' job of watching the front door! Remember in one of my other posts that I said she stares at the door all the time to see if her original owner (my brother in law) was coming back for her? But about a month ago she decided to make the break from waiting for him to show up and all of a sudden she wants to be my shadow. She would sit outside the bedroom door and whimper--she isnt a whimperer. So we let her in to sleep on the bed, too. She takes a huge leap in the air (similar to a gazelle!) and lands right in the middle of the bed, then solidly flops down and that's where she stays till morning.
2.Furniture? Sure. They get bathed regularly and dont have a bad smell, so they are allowed on the furniture. If one of them is in a chair that we or visitors want to sit in, we just tell them "get out of my chair" and both girls oblige without any further orders. We have a big cedar & foam filled dog bed on the floor in the living room, also, so sometimes one or both will lay down on it instead of on furniture. Had a vinyl couch that looked like dark green leather, but it got destroyed by the Rat terrier puppy & Sasha!!! Sasha is one of those dogs that pulls the stuffing out of all stuffed animals, and when the rattie chewed a small hole in the couch arm and Sasha saw that it was filled with the same kind of wonderful stuff that a teddy bear is filled with--it was all over! We got rid of that couch, and they dont bother the fabric one or the recliners at all.

Dobe_Paws 01-02-2006 04:13 PM

At night Ava doesn't sleep in bed with us. She used to but having to share a full sized bed with her and Brian was murder on my back. I would often awake to find myself contorted in a very uncomfortable position while the two of them snuggled comfortably together. However, she is allowed to sleep on the bed at all other times.

She usually sleeps on top of the covers but sometimes she'll find her way underneath them. I don't remember how old she was when she first started sleeping on the bed maybe when she was 8 or 9 months old. At night her and Scoob sleep on their own bed. They have a very large bed that's as thick as a mattress that they sleep on together.

Ava is allowed on the couches and she has her favorite spot on the end of our big couch. If someone is sitting in her spot she'll sit in front of them and stare til they move. I can't tell you how many times I've booted guests from that seat so she can have her place back. :) She's been allowed on the couches right along so it's pretty much a habit for her now. I could never imagine trying to break her of it...

We don't have leather couches but Brian has been begging me to get them. I don't worry so much about Ava doing any damage to them but rather the cats....

Now there's a model dog owner!!!! LOL, how do your guests feel about that?? :)

Muwah! Ask me if I care :biggrin55

brumwolf 01-02-2006 04:49 PM

It's a dobe thing Chelsie,Amber, and Tia are on the bed now, they cannot settle till they have at least 30 mins on the bed no matter what time we get in from training or whatever, then its off to their own beds, since we had a leather suite they are not allowed on,but not for the want of trying.
They have their own sofa in the conservatory and woe betide anyone who sits on that.

Answer---We do not let our dogs sleep in bed with us because of several reasons--1. we have a water bed!!! One dog maybe but 4 that would mean a lake by the middle of the night. LOL
2. we have 2 cats and that is their place to sleep. The cats were with us first and they get first choice of sleeping place.
3. Duhh!! we have 4 dogs and a King size bed.. Oh my gosh can you even think what that would be like with 4 dogs in the bed.
They all have their own bed that we pull out everynight in the kitchen. Iris still likes to sleep in her kennel but it is in the kitchen area also. Sometimes we let Raven sleep in the living room as she is our baby and the oldest but not to often.
[QUOTE]•Sit/sleep on your furniture? Do they have their favorite piece of furniture? How many have leather couches? When did you first ley them sit on the furniture[QUOTE]
Answer.. Well we do allow the dogs to get on the couch or chair. not it is hard at our house because it is musical chairs most of the night.. usually 2 will sit with hubby on the couch, one on each side of him and then one will sit with me on the lounge chair. that means that one is always sitting on the floor or on the other chair alone. well, the dogs play this game of musical chairs all the time. Usually it is Raven who starts it.. she will want to sit with me and she will first put her head on the arm of the chair, well, the other dog with give her a look like go away i am sitting with Mommy, then Raven will whin, same sad look, then she will do something like go to the door or go get a toy or bone and the other dog will go to see what she is doing.. as soon as the other dog gets up, Raven will jump into its place and give the evicted dog a growl like hey if you are that stupid to fall for a dumb trick like that you loose your place and I win! Raven is pretty smart, she has been pulling this game since Spirit was a pup! and they all fall for it!!
Leather Couch!! you got to be kidding!! with Dogs!! all of my furniture is covered with sheets or some sort of cover to keep it looking and SMELLING some what nice.

Kratty 01-02-2006 05:04 PM

LOL, Man I'm a bad dobiedad.....Nikita does not sleep with us. We have 2 cats that I have a hard time to get space from already. Adding Nikita in the mix, I can't imagine that. She still sleeps in her crate, but we are ordering this nice dog bed for her really soon now. Also she does not sit on any of the furniture, see bad dad again. We have talked about it but never really decided to let her. maybe in the future, but right now, it ain't gonna happen......LOL

IloveMyDobie31 01-02-2006 05:07 PM

Apollo has always slept in bed with me. I crated him the first night I brought him home, but I didn't think it was fair that he would be crated at night and then also when I was gone at class and work during the day so I let him sleep in bed with me from the second night on. He usually sleeps on the covers stretched out with his head on my tummy, and sometimes I wake up with his big fat nose in my face. Sometimes I sleep on my couch cause it's comfy and it's easier for me to wake up in the morning (not a morning person at all), and on those nights he'll fall asleep on my legs and I usually end up kicking him off when I can't feel them any more. He does have a doggie bed, so sometimes he'll fall asleep on that, but when I wake up he's always on the bed.

As for the furniture, he is usually on the couch when he's not running around destroying whatever he can fit in his mouth...or whatever he can rip into pieces that can then fit in his mouth. It annoys me though because it's real suede and he slobbers all over it and it is so incredibly hard to clean...not to mention it was a bit expensive (luckily it was a housewarming gift from my parents). Unfortunately, he's always been allowed on the couch, although I'm working on moving him down onto his puppy pillow more often.

Bad dad alert, i am crossing the Atlantic as we speak to take that poor deprived dobe off your hands everybody here knows it is in the doberman owners contract that they must be allowed time on their parents bed!!:3dbiggrin

Kratty 01-02-2006 06:46 PM

LOL, that is hilarious B-wolf, She may be deprived in a few things, but not all....
Here's her new bed we are ordering for her...

So, would you rather sleep on a crowded bed or have one of these entirely to yourself.....

Do you let your doberman……

• Sleep in your bed with you? Do they sleep on top or under the covers? When did they first start sleeping in the bed? Or do they have their own bed?

No, my bed is definitely out of bounds. If I can't get a good night's sleep, everyone in this household will suffer........ :haha:

• Sit/sleep on your furniture? Do they have their favorite piece of furniture? How many have leather couches? When did you first ley them sit on the furniture?

Well, this is a tricky one. Depends whether husband is home or not!! :tongue23: Jeddah sits on the couch with me to watch tele, she has her butt on the couch, back legs tucked up under her, front legs on the floor. Husband finds this acceptable, as she isn't actually on the furniture??? Work that one out...... But the other night, she climbed up on the couch between us, as our particularly savage elderly cat was holding court on the coffee table which was a little too close for Jeddah's comfort. So she needed someone to protect her, hence her sneaking up on the couch. Husband saw the distress in her eyes.....LOL.....and allowed her to stay......shock oh shock.......

No leather couches, but find with the dobe coat, as Jeddah is bathed regularly she doesn't get a doggy odour.

Luv_my_Bruno 01-02-2006 10:18 PM

Kratty, that IS a nice bed!! Poor Bruno needs a new one. We bought him just a medium sized. He's now outgrown it!! lol

doberlover 01-03-2006 10:18 AM

All Dobies sleep in bed with us on top of the covers, although during the day Alex somehow ends up underneath them on top of MY pillow (spoiled dog). Just before we turn off the tv to go to sleep we tell the fat one, Roxy, to get down and sleep in her own bed in our room. I almost always wake up with one of them looking at me with their head on my pillow - hey hubby that is where you're supposed to be! Alex sometimes wakes me up by gently kissing me on the lips, freaks me out, I always think its my husband, darn, but he has been pushed to the far end of the bed, dogs in the middle, LOL.
They also have their OWN room with 2 other beds but usually prefer the couch or 2 leather chairs. If I had more furniture they'd probably be on that too!

Gracie's_Mom 01-03-2006 10:34 AM

We did kick Gracie off the bed for a few weeks. But now she is allowed to sleep with us. Only when invited now though. She is no longer allowed to get in bed when ever she wants. We have a king size bed, so with hubby, me, Gracie and 2 cats it is hard to get a good nights sleep. We just make Gracie sleep at the foot of the bed and the cats are some where on the bed. One of them is almost always next to my side. :)

The couch well you know. If there is a bed she is allowed on then might as well let her have the couch as well. :) We have leather furniture, so there really isn't to much of a problem. Except that my one cat has pretty much destroyed it for the most part. (So if anyone ever comes over, please don't look at the sides of my furnitrue) :) She loves the chair. It is just big enough for her to curl up in a ball and sleep the day away but also small enough for her to feel like she is in a den. Then there are weeks she loves the love seat. Like last night, she slept on the love seat all night. There are times she likes the couch, mainly when one of us or a guest is on it but she does love it none the less.

Also I would just like to say for the record. My girl is not spoiled she is very well maintained. :D That's my lie and I am sticking to it. :D :D

Okay I have to ask, does Nakita get a personalized embroidered pillow too?? If she does, that might JUST make it okay!

doberkim 01-03-2006 11:13 AM

• Sleep in your bed with you? Do they sleep on top or under the covers? When did they first start sleeping in the bed? Or do they have their own bed?

Bowie sleeps in bed with me - he always has. Under or over the covers depends on the temperature - he only sleeps under covers when hes very cold or I am, and he also has his own blankets sometimes.

Willow sleeps on her double dog bed, which is next to my dog bed. It's where she chooses to sleep - she only sleeps in my bed during the day when we are not in it :)

• Sit/sleep on your furniture? Do they have their favorite piece of furniture? How many have leather couches? When did you first ley them sit on the furniture?

Willow doesn't sleep on the furniture because she currently doesn't have the confidence to get up - she is welcome and encouraged to get up, but she hasn't as of yet. It's her decision.

Bowie lives on the couch - I have two couches and a single seat, and he loves all three. I have one leather couch and it is by FAR my favorite and my next set will UNDOUBTEDLY be a full leather set, as I adore them! Bowie has been let on the furniture the entire time I have had him.

LOL!! Every time my husband makes a comment about privileges Lexus gets and the other two don't or her being supposedly "spoiled", I just tell him "it is the price of perfection and beauty, get over it:) "

Gracie's_Mom 01-03-2006 03:25 PM

I wonder if that would work around here? hmmm.

Luv_my_Bruno 01-03-2006 05:48 PM

I had to come back to this thread. Because as I was going to bed last nite. My husband had Burno in with him. As I went to move Bruno to his bed...he gave me that little gumble, and streached out. I just couldn't move him seeing how comfy he was ;) So I slide in and put Bruno between my husband and I. Well just watching him sleep was too adorable. He also snores hehe. I couldn't fall asleep because I was too distracted watching him...so I ended up on the couch so he could sleep comfortabley in MY bed lol. I know not good. But it was just once. ;)

I thought of this thread as I carried my pillow to the couch with my blanket lol
