I use Honest Kitchen Embark as my base. I add two 1/2 pound beef patties from Natures Variety per day, 3 pumps of Wild Grizzly Salmon oil, and two vitamin E capsule's from GNC.

Morning:
2 cups of HK in the, with one patty.

Night:
2 cups of HK, NV beef patty, the salmon oil and vitamin E.

3 dobermanns have james well beloved or burns any flavour 1 cup full twice a day,the swedish vallhund has 3/4 cup of the same twice a day (not fat) all have garlic capusule every morning 1 dobermann has thyroxin1.6 per day .another has proplin twice a day (old) ,all are the correct weight 3 dobermanns 37.5 kg and the vallhund is 13.5 kg .they also have raw marrow bones from the butcher which they all love.

Every morning he gets 2 cups of 'BBB' kibble, mixed with a little bone

Bone meal, cod liver oil, ginger, garlic, termeric, and CoQ10 are the additives I use mostly. I'll sometimes use valerian, or lavender if he's had a hectic day! We don't use products from manufacturers who still test on animals. It's hard, since so many of my favorite products are included in those brands! Purina, Science Diet, and MANY others are STILL testing on animals!! Sorry guys - - no can use!!

Prey Model Raw Diet. Since all dogs are 98% wolf I thought it just made sense to feed them how wolves eat. FYI, you never hear vegetable farmers complaining about wolves or coyotes.

Once a day after exercise. 1-3 pounds depending on the level of activity that day.

Not really. If I do it's just chicken jerky.

I don't see how super premium dog food can be picked over PMR unless you live in a very small apartment.

My kids are on Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach since the day they came home to live with mama. I add whatever kind of protein I have on hand, ground beef, salmon, chicken, eggs, or any kind of cheese!

Little Lady gets one cup twice a day and Mr. gets 1.5 cups twice a day with the added proteins in both!

The dogs both like cow ears, achilles tendons, tracheas, duck feet, they get each on rotation one a night. Milkbones throughout the day at crate times.

They are getting vitamins in the form of NuVet Chewables, they salivate!

We are using pro plan sensitive skin and stomach because Roxy has IBS and it is the ONLY food she can eat without problems!

Currently, Hanna is eating Canidae GrainFree PURE Sky dry food. I switched her to Canidae after she fell extremely ill over the Summer. We still haven't figured out what made her sick, but I decided to use that time to transition her to something better. I had been feeding her Natural Balance Chicken and Sweet Potato for about 1-year prior.

2x a day; 3 cups in total (She's not as active now that we're temporarily in an apartment. When we move into the new house, she will get much more exercise and probably another cup of food as well.)

She gets pig ears, carrots, oranges, Whimzees Hedgehog-shaped treats, and I buy a bag of treats (Organix, Zuke's or Wet Noses) when I go to the pet store. She gets treats when she's training/learning and when I need her to concentrate on something other than trying to play with me!

Not regularly. Sometimes she will get a multivitamin, fish oil capsule or a hip/joint vitamin.

I chose Canidae Grainfree PURE Sky because I heard great things about it from the web, friends and other pet owners, and I wanted to keep the ingredients list as small as possible. It's been about 4 months, and we've had incredible results. Her stool is a lot more solid and less awful smelling. It's also much more predictable.

We feed Raw. Why? Tired of worrying. Even though we fed a high quality kibble (Now) you cannot know exactly what us in a food unless you are doing it yourself.

(word of mouth, internet, friends, vet, etc) I used to feed petcureans Now. I fed it as a Canadian company committed to keeping crap out of my dogs system that shouldn't be there. No overseas manufacturing, using only named meats (no animal digest fir my baby).

My dobe is on Blue Wilderness Salmon recipe. He eats twice a day with some olive oil, coat supplement, multivitamins and also hip and joint supplements. He also will get a little bit of gravy drizzled on top.

Mine loves the Blue Wilderness. Since switching, it has really helped with a skin problem he had. His coat is shiny and beautiful. He gets lots of compliments from others on our daily walks. I have even had cars stop and take pictures of him.

We feed our own healthy adults raw but keep our fosters on good kibble/canned as that's what they're likely to get in their new home.

#1 is check the ingredient list. ANYTHING generic like "animal fat", "meat protein", "meat by-products", etc we drop straight away. These foods contain rendered shelter dogs and cats, road kill, etc. Cannibalism is bad on every level starting with health. I'd rather see road kill as an ingredient than generic "animal fat".

Second we check the ingredient list for real food without corn, wheat, soy or sorghum. Also hate to see lots of filler like 2 or 3 ingredients listings of potato in the top 5 or 6 ingredients.

I also read the ingredients of our preferred brands to check they haven't done the usual pet food scam of starting to substitute cheap junk while upping the branding, advertising and price.

If it looks like we would eat it and it's not from a company sourced in China or that has had a lot of recalls, we'll try it. We like Solid Gold, Pinnacle, Innova, Natural Balance and a few others.

Scary junk we run away from is all Purina, Science Diet, Iams, Euakuba, Royal Canin off the top of my head.

Better nutrition with lots of exercise has done well for less vet visits and longer lived dogs in our home.

Would you rule out Purina Pro Select? Its ranked fairly high on dogfoodadvisor.com and a lot of top end breeders reccomend it.

Purina uses msbc which is synthetic vitamin k. This can cause all sorts of issues. They also use beet pulp and other fillers which are not very digestible for dogs. They also use 'animal fat' what animal? Dried egg is high on the allergy sensitivity list.
Better to go with a higher quality kibble, or feed raw.

We've been adding a raw egg to our mixed breed's dinner (dry) about every other night too.

6 month old pup

Up until 6 months he got 1 bowl of puppy milk in the morning first thing, 500g of raw beef offcuts mid morning with a handful of biscuits, 500g of chicken necks with a handful of biscuits in the evening and then a bowl of puppy milk before bed.

Now he gets the same minus the puppy milk.

We followed the breeders advice but don't use supplements.

Should we change his diet? Are we under feeding him? Thanks!

Buddy gets 2 cups am of Holistic Select Senior 4 salmon oil capsules 1T local honey 1 T Coconut oil sometimes eggs,sardines, cooked meat very small amounts also 2 cups in the pm. Patches the Dachshund gets 1/8 cup Wellness dry food for overweight dogs (gains if looks at food) green beans, lettuce,spinach, pretty much anything green,carrots sometimes eggs, very small amounts of cooked meats. also 1/8 cup in the pm she gets 1 salmon oil capsule a day on Mondays & Fridays they both get vitamin E.

Dante is currently on Acana grain-free varieties, but has been on EVO, Orijen, Merrick, Fromm, and Taste of the Wild (all have been grain free) in the past. His morning meal is generally mixed with a bit of warm water and he gets plain yogurt mixed in a few times a month.

He gets fed twice a day (generally 12 hours apart); 1 cup twice daily.

Treats consist of carrots, blueberries, raw green beans, partially cooked chicken, eggs, and pumpkin and all are given sparingly.

I switched Dante over to grain-free premium diets about the time he turned 1. I was not nutritionally savvy at that time (I was only 19!), but I could tell that he just did not enjoy the food I was feeding--Beneful, Iams, etc. I would literally have to stand there and tell him to eat! I'd like to look into raw/homecooked once I get back to College Station and meet with the board-certified nutritionist at the school. She's pro-raw/homecooked and I value her opinions and knowledge. There's also several local butchers, farms, and ranches, so I can be more certain of where my pup's food is coming from. That being said, Dante has been on premium kibble since he was 1 with the added treats and such. At the age of 8, he has 0 health problems aside from a few pesky lipomas. No thyroid, liver, gallbladder, heart, kidney or GI issues whatsoever (knock on wood!!!). He gets regular exercise, so he's very lean and muscled. I can't help but think his diet has played some kind of role in his good health.

Looking for insight. 7mo old. Need a good dry food suggestion. And I've seen ppl feeding yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs, etc. what are your thoughts. Help a new owner out.

I have an 8 month old pup. I feed a grain free kibble. She is fed Taste of the Wild High Prairie Puppy. I just ordered a bag of their Pacific Stream Puppy. Both have the correct calcium/phosphorous ratios. She does well on it. There are a ton of foods out there along with as many opinions. Feed a good quality food that works for your pup. Also, this book DOG FOOD LOGIC - MAKING SMART DECISIONS FOR YOUR DOG IN AN AGE OF TOO MANY CHOICES - Dogwise Published Items - Dogwise.com is a good read. It really helped my angst over finding the "perfect" food for my crew. I feed mainly kibble, with a little bit of "extra" at dinnertime, like a glob of canned food or some raw.

If you've got a picky eater, don't add anything to tempt them to eat, though, since it usually backfires. (Mine would probably eat dirt if I put in in their bowls...)

My 2 dobies have always been fed "Pro Plan" Large Breed Weight Management dry food and have done very well. My vet also feels this is an excellent food. Jack weighs 140 lbs. (not a warlock, just a big guy-- no fat, all muscle), and Lola weighs 85 lbs. They are fed twice a day, Jack gets 2 heaping cups per meal and Lola is fed 1 1/2 cups per meal. I make my own yogurt and add a big spoonful of plain yogurt at each meal (this REALLY helps prevent the farts!) Sometimes I scramble a couple eggs (w/o butter) and add that to one of the meals, and other times I sprinkle a little lowfat cheese over the top of the food (like fresh parmesan) just for flavor. It's so funny, because if you set down a dish of the dry food with nothing added, they won't even start eating, they just sit there and stare at me like, "Well.... where's the rest?" They just know SOMETHING else is supposed to be in the dish along with the dry food. I also make all of my own dog treats, never store bought, as I want to control what goes into them and I want them to be fresh, healthy, and w/o preservatives; I make them with wheat germ, peanut butter banana, cheddar garlic, sometimes pumpkin, or apple, etc. Even though the treats I make are very healthy, they are also very restricted, and no treats are given for "free"-- that is, they are expected to obey a command to get the "reward". I sort of have a rule when it comes to feeding something to my dogs, if it's something I wouldn't eat (other than the kibble of course) then I won't feed it to my dogs.

My vet specifically recommends "Centrum Silver" Vitamin supplements they each get one of the vitamins 3 times a week (wrapped up in a small piece of bread & peanut butter) -- no pill pockets here...

What is the best diet for putting on health weight?

Their is no one diet but a quality kibble at the label amounts is a good start.
