I am just enquiring as i'm sure most of you are aware docking is now banned in a lot of countries in Europe. I was curious to know if you'd still own the breed or would you move onto another breed?

sorry if this has been posted before.

I think we've discussed this a couple times actually - in fact, several months ago, I even did a poll on it... From what I remember pretty much everyone agreed that they'd still own/love Doberman's and several acknowledged that they would continue to fight against the ban.
Personally, I like the natural look as much as the cropped/docked, my hang up is dew claws only because I've seen them torn and ripped before - not a pretty site. Plus, they're a pain to cut/dremel - but I woundn't hesitate owning a Dobe with them either :)

i said it was banned in a lot of countries, not all.

I'm just wondering because of England's recent ban and a lot of the english breeders saying they wouldnt continue to own a dobe, they would find another breed. In my eyes the Dobe is a gorgeous dog whatever, i PREFER the docked look but i'd still buy a undocked dobe, in fact ive seen a few pics of them and cant say they look aweful........ just different.

My apologies for the repeat thread, i havent been as active as i have in the past so obviously missed it:)

yeah although I do like the dock for sure...Im neutral on the ears...I like the ears cropped but ever since I have been on this forum I have started to really like the floppy ears.
But I will always have a doberman no matter what
floppy crop docked or not :) they are always beautiful!

I personally wouldn't care. For me the biggest attraction of the breed is their intelligence and personality. My other choice of a breed would have been a GSD, and even if undocked/uncropped I would still pick the dobe over that because of their easy to care for coat.

I would immagine these bans might have a negative effect on the breed's use as guard/working dogs. It's hard enough for people to find good quality working dobermans. Making them houndy looking I think will make it that much more difficult for working people to choose them as they do need their dog to look some what scary to the bad guys. The ears and the tail make a big difference to some people's perception of what they're looking at.

I won't lie I love a good crop! My dobe is cropped and docked BUT I adopted her that way. For me, as a pet owner I will only ever adopt a dog so if the dog that I 'click' with has it's tail and ears I wouldn't care... Having said that at least a docked tail, I like being able to have flowers on my coffee table! LOL :tongue23:

I don't know--the dog that I fell in love with is docked and cropped--looks count for something with me and I found in the course of owning some other breeds over the years as well as Dobermans that other breeds who live with me tend to behave much more like my Dobermans than anything else.

I'd realy have to think long and hard about an undocked Dobe--I could probably adjust to ears.

Like I said if they banned docking and cropping I would still own a dobe...but just for people who may get confused on choosing a breeder...I would never get a dobe from a person that would leave the ears and tail natural (while it is still legal)...

I agree, I love the cropped and docked look. I grew up with c/d Dobes and own c/d Dobes today. I could adjust to the natural ears and docked tail, but I don't care for the totally natural look.

A dobe is dobe is a dobe,i have said this before and i think it is crazy to say that having it's tail left will change the dog,as much as i like a cropped tail ther is no way on earth i will change breed because of 14 inches of extra tail!

While I understand what some are saying. Cause your right the breed wont be any different...only in the looks. But I dont think its so bad that people who love the traditional look, want to keep it and fight for it.

Seems here in the US we are slowly losing our rights on many things. I mean if they prefer that look, they do so for a reason. They find it to be very beautiful, in combination with the breed and all it stands for, which includes the crop/dock look, at least here in the US. That will always be the traditional look. and can mean a great deal to some people.

I think its great that so many people want to fight to preserve that tradition and right.I think it should be left up to the owner. And lord knows I would rather see a crop by a vet, then done by some fool out in his backyard. Sadly I have heard of people cutting dogs ears off with scissors. And I could be way off base here, but I do fear if it is banned that it will only cause more idiots to try to do it themselves.

I think it should just come down to, let the owners make the choice.:punk:

The real scary thing we should worry about if they ban cropping and docking is all the people who buy the dog and decide that since a vet won't do it "I'll do it myself!"

That when the real problem will set in.

I love the C&D look....but also love those ears natural. I think that it is wonderful that some breeders give you that option.

yeah I must say I too have fallen in love with the floppy ear dobes on this forum! Chi, the brumwolf pack, and especially the picture of Bowie in Doberkims signature makes me enjoy the look! :) I think I would definately love to get a floppy ear dobe if I ever rescue a dobe when Im older and stuff...

Quick question since I've always wondered this about cropping...till what age is it okay to do it till? Some people say a year, others don't know and since I'm hanging out with so many wonderful, dobe pros here I thought I'd ask.
