My 6 year old, male "Shadow" is showing Wobbler Disease symptoms.

Shadow usually runs in great excitement when its type for dinner, and the past 3 days he is walking and not running. His neck is in a downward position, I can also just see sadness in his eyes and body language.

This is my 1st Dobie, I bought from a AKC breeder. I'm so sad, I will be taking Shadow to the vet on the weekend.

There are so many things that could be responsible for what you are seeing, and I am hoping for you that it is something minor and temporary. I understand the worry that leads one to assume the worst... I often find myself doing this. I hope you get to feel the relief of finding that you've been worried for nothing. Please update when you have some news...

A doberman with CVI will also have trouble going up or down steps. My girl also licked her back legs from the hock down. Nothing would stop her and she had several granulomas on both legs. She did this for years before she was diagnosed, but this was a long time ago and vets werent as aware of CVI as they are now. I believe the compression by the disc or discs on the spinal cord causes a tingling in the rear legs which results in some or all CVI dogs to lick the areas that tingle. I hope your boy doesnt have CVI, but there are several different options for treatment now, so the prognosis could turn out alright.

Don't just assume it is wobblers, and don't let the vet assume that either .... because plenty of them will. There are other reasons for neck/back pain.

Rule out lymes, and a neck/back injury - that would be my first plan. x-rays won't diagnose wobblers normally, but they can see other possible injuries and are certainly cheaper than going right to an MRI or mylogram.

I hope there is nothing seriously wrong with Shadow. Is this the first time he has shown any symptoms? It wasn't clear to me from your post if he has been diagnosed before. As others have said, it could be something else.

Both of my last Dobes had temporary problems with their necks once or twice. They could not raise their heads without pain and I had to feed one of them from an elevated bowl for a few weeks. Eventually, they were back to normal. Come to think of it, my daughter's Lab had the same problem with her neck a few times too.

Going through this right now too, and sending you good vibes. Until you get to the vet, I'd confine him to a room, limit stairs and jumping on furniture, and use a harness instead of a collar to walk him with- this is what I have to do with Griffin right now and he sounds real similar, like you said in the thread I started for him. Give your guy a hug for me please.

Your dogs are your dogs... there is no way to determine if what the OP is dealing with with his dog is in any way similar to what other dogs may have had going on... and no reason to suggest that what you found appropriate to treat your dogs would also be appropriate for another dog.

Without a diagnosis and a clue, ain't no way you could even pay me to allow someone to do any kind of physical manipulation if this was my dog. The risk of exacerbating whatever damage is there is not one I would take.

If this was my dog, I would want him seen quickly. I would want to address any issues of swelling as soon as possible, so that further damage was hopefully minimized and healing could begin. I would want an actual, real diagnosis so that a proper course of action could be chosen... even if that course of action is only rest and inactivity for a period of time.

Audrey's symptoms were: stopped running, loss of strength in hind legs; something in her gait that would be just a bit off and I would think she might have stepped on something.
It came on slowly over a period of a year - then I heard her dragging her paws and nails on the concrete street. During the past year, she was chewing on her toes and the vet thought it was allergy. But anithistamines didn't help it. Steriods did. Now I think she chewed on her toes because she was dragging them on the ground and hitting the tops of her knuckles at times. Of course, it might also just be arthritis in her toes, since she turned out to be older than they originally told me.
When it became very obvious something was wrong and she was seen and diagnosed with Wobbler's, at this point she had a sudden 'flare up' which might have been brought on by the collar being pulled...who knows? She usu doesn't pull on the collar but she is reactive to dogs so if that occurs, I pull. Anyway, when it suddenly got much worse, she didn't 'sit' but plopped down into a sit. Twice she has just been standing there and her legs collapsed under her! But then she was able to walk again.
I have carpet and runners all over the house. She will slip and her legs will go out if there isn't enough traction. Walking straight ahead is fine. But going around a corner fast is not fine. She can still do stairs well but isn't comfortable getting into a car. I have used the RuffWear Webmaster Harness when I need to get her in the car, to assist her.
I started a thread in the Health section because I wanted write about the symptoms and progression in our case and so others might benefit by being aware that some of these symptoms could possibly be an indication of early Wobbler's..or late Wobbler's. Altho it may sound like my gal is doing horribly, she is doing all right as long as I restrict and modify. She is relatively comfortable i the house but I think she may feel more vulnerable when outside. But she spends alot of time on her cushion - always has.
Anyway, I hope Shadow is doing all right. Sometimes a round of prednisone and painkillers and modifying what your lifestyle is with your dog will go a long ways.

I want to start off my thanking this amazing community. Im a new member and I'm amazed at the support from everyone!

Today as I got home from work Shadow ran to my car with his toy in his mouth as usual, this was a relief. I feed him and he didn't run in around in circles in excitement as usual but I can tell he was happy, walking with a normal posture vs yesterdays.

After he finished his meal, I have him a small treat. Before the treat I made him "Bark" ( he knows the command )......on mid bark, Shadow cried in pain. =( Barking some how hurt him.

@Fitzmar Dobermans @R2reddobes,
I really do hope it is just a neck injury, I will update this post as I can. I'm planning a vet visit on Saturday.
