Wild woman!!

******* is turning into a little wild woman! She is great when doing her basic o.b. She is progressing pretty good. She knows sit, down, come, stay, she is working on give and leave it. Of course in the house she does all these commands, and in the backyard. She will sit from a distance of about 30 ft in the park or trails while off leash. Pretty good I think??
The problem? Well, when we go for walks and stop to talk to someone she get's soooo excited, she jumps up on them, pulling at the leash I feel so bad for the person. I tell the person to tell ******* to sit and yes she does for a mila second but then it starts all over again. Am I asking to much at such a young age? Also, she is really pulling on the lead, what did you guys/gals do to teach heel at 4 months of age.
I am starting classes at the end of this month with her so hopefully things will get better. :help_up_2

I don't think I taught heel at 4 months of age, even with my latest puppy.

What I found worked for pulling on walks with both him and Mic was stopping when they pull. You can wait for them to loosen the leash before you continue the walk, which didn't work at all with Mic, but does with the puppy, or you can wait until they look at you, and then praise or use a bridge word and give them a treat, which worked great with Mic.
When they pull on the lead stop and wait for them to loosen the leash before you continue to walk. Then praise or use a bridge word and give them a treat, which worked great wonders. I use this method with all my dogs. I have had great results. Good luck and have fun!!
What is a "bridge word"??
I think they mean like a praise word,or a release word, works almost like a clicker. Like for instance the instant Rommel does exactly what I want.....He hears "Okay" and at that point he is free and gets rewarded. The time between doing what you want, hearing the word, and getting the reward gradually gets longer and longer.
BIB correct!!

Thats what I should have worded it different.

Oh, o.k. thanks B&B I understand.;)
Did you guy's just use a flat leather or nylon collar on your pup at that age?
I wouldn't worry too much i am still having trouble with Mischa and she is 7 months old(and nuts)

In your experience, generally speaking at what age do Dobes "outgrow" the nuttiness?

My boy is doing pretty well with the Good Canine Citizen training, but the one task that gets him everytime is sitting and greeting a friendly stranger. I put him in a "sit" and I can just see the excitement ooze out of him as the stranger gets closer and closer to the point where he wants to bounce around like Tigger. If not kept in check, he'll also do an excited "Dobe poke" to areas humans consider quite private. To women, it is simply super rude. To men, it can drop them to their knees. It's quite embarassing.
Oh yea, the dreaded dobe poke! ******* once nipped me in that area, I'm not a man but that dropped me to my knees.

Brumwolf, it's good to know someone with four doberkids also has this problem!

I think either one would work fine, but with the praise words (if you use a reward that they really really like) you will quickly learn that you may not need any collar at all!

I'm basically doing the "leerburg" method with Rommel that I saw in one of the tapes (The Competition Heeling Dog) and he has improved 100%. Those tapes are brilliant for people like me who have not trained dogs to that level before.
