I was wondering, why did you guys choose to buy/rescue a Dobe?

Reason I ask is, I was in the vets the other day when a woman came over and asked me why I had a Doberman, I told her my reasons.

Always liked the breed.
Felt they engendered respect so hopefully burglars won't call at my house.
Considered them intelligent, loyal etc, etc.
That I thought they were beautiful.

She was not impressed by my answers, but then I wasn't that bothered if she was or wasn't, but it got me thinking, so I asked her why she chose a Pomeranian?

Her answer, she wanted a dog she could carry around and dress up.

1. I love Big Black Dogs (and the reds are creeping in....)

2. Intelligence. Sometimes I give Elka more credit than she deserves, because of how smart she is. Or do I? But, I would not have taken so deeply to a dumber dog, I feel.

3. Affection. Now this one is a two-edged sword. She wants to be with me all. The. Time. A lot of the time, I want her to be with me. See the discrepancy? But, there is no love like Doberman love, and I believe that firmly.

I picked a Doberman because I wanted a dog that was:

-intelligent; trainable
-on the larger side of the spectrum
-easy to maintain (grooming-wise)
-affectionate

I got all of that, plus HILARIOUS entertainment all the time. She's precious. And I love that she thinks she's tiny and crawls on top of me when I'm sitting in my recliner.

We wanted one because they are a large, short coated dog, very loving, intelligent and loyal, protective of their home and family. And we found that this is our breed for sure. They are wonderful dogs, we are totally in love with the breed!

Of all the breeds of dogs that I"v worked with I've never been more amazed that I was with the dobies. They're super smart and absolutely beautiful. They are the only breed of dog that I've seen consistently control a group of dogs without any aggressive behavior and I really respect that. I also wanted a visual deterrent as I'm a smaller, younger female. I love how loyal and loving they are and the short coat is definitely a plus. So between all of that and then all of the years of research that I did on the breed I felt like the doberman was perfect for me :] I couldn't be happier.

I was raised around dobermans. I loved them! However, I got a husky--hybrid as a young adult.....she was awesome! She lived until she was 15. But when she passed I wanted another dog but not another husky. I loved my huskys mask....I loved the eye "dots." So when she passed I thought about the doberman again....eye dots and all! I'm so happy I got another one....I'm in love again! I'm one my third one! I think I will have one from here out. I loved my husky......she was a lot of work! I don't ever think I will get over her.....

RIP Froggy

Well, I guess for the same reason anyone falls in love with anything.

For me, it was absolutely love at first sight, and first encounter. I got really lucky being introduced to some great examples of good Dobermans, and I just adored the intelligence, personality, expressionism and appearance.

I guess, all in all, it's everything I ever wanted in a dog that I couldn't express completely with words. I feel most proud being owned by a well-trained, elegant, brilliant Doberman.

Owning a Doberman is owning a living, breathing work of art. The Doberman is the Cadillac of the dog world for many reasons. Anyone who disagrees just doesn't know what they're missing out on. Their loss! They can stick with frou frou and tutus, I'll stick with brains and class :)
THIS :) I've been around almost every other breed there is, and NOTHING compares to a doberman. I had heard them called the "Cadillac" of breeds but until I saw my first one in person, I never knew what it really meant. I'll never forget when the new vet I was working for opened the front office door and her doberman (retired show champion) came prancing in. He was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen and literally took my breath away. From that moment on, I was hooked. Saying they are like a work of art is a perfect description. To me, there is nothing else more beautiful than a happy healthy doberman :) I'll watch Gunner run in the backyard and it's like a slow motion movie moment lol! My husband has also fallen head over heels in love with this breed and I hope we never live without one.

When I was about 10 years old, I had a friend who lived in a 2 family house. The owners of the house had a female doberman, and they kept him outside while they were at work, chained to the corner of the yard with a dog house. This dog was crazy, very aggressive, think of the movie Sandlot... If we were playing with a ball, and it went into her "area", the ball was gone for good. We were terrified of this dog, but since it was chained up, we weren't afraid to be in the yard. But we would never get anywhere near it. Even though this thing seemed like a monster, and we KNEW if it got out it would eat us all, she was absolutely gorgeous, and commanded your respect.

After maybe a year or 2, we were finally "officially" introduced. We quickly learned that she was a loving, sweet, playful dog, just mishandled.... Didn't know at the time she was mishandled, we were too young for that. But after meeting her, we started taking her for walks, and playing in the yard more, and one of my favorite things to do was take this big, beautiful, amazing dog out for walks. At 10 years old, she dragged me wherever she damn well pleased, I had zero control, wasn't strong enough, and she had zero leash manners.

But after getting to know her, and realize she wasn't going to eat me, I thought if I ever got a dog, it would be one just like her. After getting a little older, and realizing why she was acting the way she was, because she wasn't trained, was left tied up, never walked, etc., and with the little to no exercise and play I gave her, and how quickly her attitude changed, I was hooked. Now, looking back, it makes perfect sense why she was so cranky all the time, she probably didn't want to kill us, she wanted to be loose so she could come play with us. Ever since that time, I always knew I wanted a doberman.

I didn't pick a doberman , i was a Labrador retriever type of guy all my life. But when i got with JulieW from here. She had shown dobermans and owned them all her life , she had a older doberman when we met by the name of Lucy. Lucy slowly warmed me up to dobermans. Once Lucy passed we got Cher , now Cher stole my heart 150%. She is the sweetest most caring and goofiest dog i have ever known. I still love my labs but i am now a doberman person all because of a red lady named Cher. Dobermans are GREAT dogs , i will have one forever now , they have a way of stealing your heart. They are a true companion.
