White Spot

7003 Views 13 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  BackInBlack
I noticed in some of LapDog's pictures that Dutchess has the white spot on her front, and I know the standard allows for a white spot, no more than an inch??? (I could be wrong on that part)

Anyway, my question is... Rommel doesn't have the "spot" but he has like a little tuft of white hair right in the same place that Dutchess does. When he was really little I thought it was just a stray hair or something, and I tried to pull it out. (It wasnt alot) But it has gotten to be a little bigger, so I guess it is there to stay.... I know I read or heard somewhere that this spot goes back to some line of dogs or some specific dog. Just curious if anyone knows what dog or dogs...and if there is any truth to that.

that is all I know about the white on the chest...:) Ive never measured Duchess's spot to see if it actually is a half inch or less...
Amber has a large white slash on her chest and i do know it comes from a French breed which is in the doberman lines,i will check my reference books when i get home and will post the name of the breed.
brum, you are thinking of the beauceron.
Hey LD! Love that siggie!! But what on earth is the third pic of??? I'll probably kick myself and say OH YEAH, when you tell me, but I just can't figure it out now!
Bruno has two white toes. Which is the reason I picked him.
It's crazy though, because you would never even know that it is there unless you really inspected him. It's like maybe 10 hairs, at most.
BIB made that as a suggestion for my art project...the picture is this one...

lol go ahead...kick yourself ;) jk :)

AHHH! Now I see it! LOL, I told you, I look at it now and it is totally clear to me, but earlier I just couldn't make it out! It was like one of those pictures they used to publish in the newspaper that you had to stare at until it was suddenly clear :) Then after that, you saw it everytime.

Yes Kim the book say's "another reason for considering that the Beauceron was used in the evolution of the Doberman is that this breed often carries a white patch on the chest,a trait which was apparent in the original Dobermans and still crops up occasionally today"
There are several myths about white spots on the chest. The biggest one is the one that claims that the so called "Warlock Doberman" (an oversized Doberman) can be identified by a number of things--size, cowlicks and a white spot on the chest. White spots (usually small) white hairs and white streaks (also usually small) occasionally show up on Dobes from almost any line you can think of. It means nothing unless it's so big as to be disqualifying.

Someone else mentioned white toes? Same thing there although a good many dogs who were immediate descendents of Ch Delegate VD Elbe (a major contributer to the breed in the 1950's) did have one or two white toes--often only as puppies and as they grew up the white disappeared.
