I'm looking to buy a doberman puppy (my first one) and am trying to find a reputable breeder around Philadelphia. Willing to travel in PA and to NY, NJ, and DE. I'm looking for a companion, a family dog, and I have not interest in showing it or any other competitions. I just want a HEALTHY, friendly dog who will make a good family pet and comes from a reputable breeder. What are some reputable breeders in the area? And has anyone heard of Dagobah Dobermans in NY?

There are a lot of really good breeder in the tri state area. Start with the DPCA breeder list, but do your homework. Most good breeders don't always have puppies available - you have to be willing to wait.

If you would like to meet some breeders and owners, there is a show this Sunday in Chester County PA - here is a link for it. Dobermans are on in the afternoon: ring 6 at around 2pm. There will also be people there on Saturday, but a lot of us will be at the Quaker City DPC WAE and Cardio clinic all day Saturday and can only show on Sunday.

Can I trust that I'll get a good dog from any of the breeders on the DPCA breeder list? Is there some type of qualification a breeder must meet to be placed on that list or can anyone who calls them-self a breeder ask to be placed on the DPCA breeder referral list?

The list isn't the be all and end all, not by any means. But it is a start, and you will likely find names on there that you can come back and search on here for feedback.

The list isn't perfect, you need to talk to them and ask your own questions- they should only be breeding titled dogs (dogs with an AKC Championship title) and they should have all health tests completed... I would make sure they...
Know the vWD status of their dogs
Have tested their hearts with a holter monitor and echo, it's a plus if they also have the DNA test results (although these results have proved to often be unreliable)
Have the dog's Thyroid checked
Have the results for OFA hips and elbows
Have eyes certified with CERF

And if I'm missing anything hopefully someone will add to my list :)

They should also be happy to talk to you about the health of their dogs and all dogs in the pedigrees being bred.

Good luck finding your puppy!

I'd only add that I expect this for at least 3 generations of a pedigree and I look at lateral results (Aunts uncles etc.). And ask about longevity - I think that is one crucial element that might get overlooked.

Great point, this is definitely something I'd need to know before taking a puppy home.

I should also say that the AKC CH is only a "must have" for breeders who aren't breeding working dogs. If you're looking for a working breeder I'd look for SchH or IPO titles instead... among other things, but I'm not a "working" owner so I'm not the person to ask about the appropriate titles! Since you're just looking for a pet (not looking to compete) I think you should be looking at show breeders though.

I assume you are going to be there? I will as well. I am getting a puppy from Sharon and am just going to see dogs, talk etc. Unfortunately I can't stay long because I have a concert that starts @ 1230 so I am going to be leaving around 11. Was gonna try and be there from 945-11

Tarheel, may I recommend Sharon Marinelli. She lives in NJ and has been so helpful in talking to her and everything. Answers any questions you have, and best of all does health testing out the wazoo. I called about getting a puppy from her previous litter but when they were born, they were all spoken for. I've waited around until her next litter is born just communicating. I didn't mind waiting knowing I was going to be getting a great pup.
