As far as new puppy checkup and shots go? I will hopefully be bringing my first dobe home in the next 2-3 weeks :please: and want to choose the right vet (semi-new to this town as far as vets go). Should I expect rabies vac/distemper/bordella (sp?) @12 weeks? The puppy has 1st shots and dewormed already. Also I was quoted $280-$350 for cropping. Not sure I will be getting tghe crop done locally but suppoesedly the vet who quoted $280 is quite experianced. This sound right as far as price? Also if anyone in the area has any vet/crop recommendations I would greatly appreciate it!

Don't ever do a rabies show within at least 2 weeks of any other shot - I personally won't do one till 6 months and won't do one within a month of any other shot.

If your puppy will have had just one shot, you will need another combination shot done within 3 -4 weeks of the first one and then one more 3-4 weeks after that. I do a 5 way shot for my puppies - borditella is a separate vaccination and I do the nasal drops for that one. I don't do most of the other optional shots.

Can't help with the cropping as I am on the east coast - it's too bad the breeder did not have this done for you. I hate it when people are left to flounder around trying to find a vet to crop.

Well the "breeder" is a whole 'nother issue lol.If I get him I'm getting this guy for free from a 1 litter byb who can't home his pups and so now he is getting rid of them(don't really wanna get into it). Not friends with this guy and wouldn't give him a dime for a pup so no worries there. Basically I neither expect nor want help from this guy!

I wait as long as possible to due rabies. The law in my state is 4 months but I tend to push it to 5-6 months. I don't give DHPP and rabies at the same time. My vet doesn't deworm unless need be. So far my puppies have all come from breeders who did it before they came home, so it hasn't been necessary. I don't give lepto, corona or bordetella.

Puppies get a head to to exam when they see the vet and lots of treats :)

As far as cropping, my advice is go to the DOBE EXPERT in the area even if you have to drive.

I don't know about prices but MAKE SURE YOU SEE PICTURES. People can really say whatever they want but a picture will truly show you the vet's real cropping skill (whether he has one or not). A crop is something that you have to live with for the life of the dog so you want to make sure that the right person does it.

Where are you located?
What age is the pup?
Do you have any photos of the pups?

I push rabies out to about 7 months if I can get away with it, later if possible.

I try not to have too many vaccines in any one shot as that can set the dog up for possible vaccine reactions. Not as common in dobes, but for some other breeds it is best to do each shot separately and even spread the rabies vaccine out over time and not give the whole shot in one go (great danes and chihuahuas all get the same amount - not so good for the littlies).

I follow a schedule of only 2 puppy rounds - per Dr. Jean Dodd's website:

"CANINE VACCINATION PROTOCOL - 2005
MINIMAL VACCINE USE
Note: The following vaccine protocol is offered for those dogs where minimal vaccinations are advisable or desirable. The schedule is one I recommend and should not interpreted to mean that other protocols recommended by a veterinarian would be less satisfactory. It's a matter of professional judgment and choice.

AGE OF PUP......................................VACCINE TYPE

9 - 10 weeks..................................... Distemper + Parvovirus, MLV (e.g. Intervet Progard Puppy DPV)
14 weeks.......................................... Same as above
16 -18 weeks (optional)....................... Same as above
20 weeks or older, if allowable by law..... Rabies
1 year.............................................. Distemper + Parvovirus, MLV
1 year.............................................. Rabies, killed 3-year product (give 3-4 weeks apart from distemper/parvovirus booster)

Perform vaccine antibody titers for distemper and parvovirus annually thereafter. Vaccinate for rabies virus according to the law, except where circumstances indicate that a written waiver needs to be obtained from the primary care veterinarian. In that case, a rabies antibody titer can also be performed to accompany the waiver request. "

I am in Abilene,TX

The pup will probably be 12 weeks when I get him. He is 10 weeks now

I posted a pic in my other thread entitled ADVICE and now for some reason I can't post it again?

It seems like alot of people suggest pushing the rabies back as far as possible. Whats the reason for this? Not challenging the idea just yearning for some learning!

It is not that rare for an immune mediated disease to be caused by rabies vaccine. I personally want the dog to be about full-sized when they get the vaccine for the first time unless there is some particular risk in your area. It happened to one of my dogs and therefore I am possibly over-cautious. All 5 of my vets (2 regular, 1 internist, 1 neurologist and 1 alternative - from 3 separate clinics) have mentioned this possibility and I got a waiver without issue for my dog to never get rabies vaccinations again.

12 weeks is pushing it for ear cropping. I highly recommend you contact Dr. Schaffer in Frisco, TX. She's one of the best croppers in the US.

She is good. She did the taping and posting for Roxy's ear's. She did not do the cropping but the person who taught her cropped Roxy's ears. I like her a lot because you can tell she cares so much about dogs.
