What do you think about this site?

I'm just looking for breeders in my area for a pet dobie and perusing right now. I'm unsure of this site/breeders. BYB? Family of breeders? Any ideas? They have pedigree listed for litters.

BYB. There is nothing outstanding about the dogs - the conformation is poor to mediocre. They are pets, not breeding quality.

BYB. Looks like people breeding their pets.

Did you look at the DPCA site for breeders in your area? What is your area? Maybe people here can help you with finding a good one in your area.

BTW, anyone can have pedigrees for their dogs. I did not look that well, but am not very impressed with the two I looked at.

I'm near Charlotte, NC. I'm not sure when we'll be looking to buy, probably around 1000.

Totally unimpressive pedigrees, totally unimpressive dogs. And look at the prices!

Have you considered contacting any of the local rescue groups or shelters? If you want a Dobe as a family pet, you might want to consider this option. there are absolutelty lovely Dobes that end up in rescues because their owners weren't prepared for such a high-energy dog. Some shelters, for the price of a small donation ($25) will put your name on a preferred list and contact you if/when they get Dobe pups brought in. Some people breed their Dobes so that their children can experience 'the miracle of life' (I know, don't get me started) and then don't know what to do with all the pups that result.

Java is close to 2 years old and we'd love to get another, and I would definitely get another via a rescue or shelter.

I would love to rescue a puppy or young dog but the ages of my children disqualify us. We've had two dobermans and just lost our girl the first of the year but I do understand their reservations to the childrens ages.
Just another local resource for info, http://pkc.org/index2.html. As Uwharrie said, there are several reputable breeders in the area.

Having young children makes it all that much more important to find a really good breeder who breeds for health, conformation AND correct temperament. There are good breeders in your geographic area - rescue is a great idea also, but waiting to rescue till your children are a little older might be best. I know people who have one well bred Dobe and one rescue - they get the best of both worlds :). They had to wait a while after their last Dobermans died to replace them as they had Quintuplits (yes FIVE kids all at once), I'm thinking that they just added new Dobermans when the kids were about 6. One puppy from a breeder and one adult dog from rescue.

WOOoooowwW! 5 little kids and puppy. MADNESS!

I also suggest the rescue option. The dobe who made me love this breed was from a rescue. After my own dog, I would take him over any breed, puppy or not- in the whole entire world.

I will admit...I didnt even bother clicking and going to the website...I looked at the link and thought Dobieden? sounds like pigpen...so started making me think about just a den of poor doberman puppies...they bred for no good reason except to have a den of money after the puppies are long gone and sold. :( again...just gut reaction just from the link...no real reason of thinking that other than their name considering I didnt even click on the link.
Here are some red flags that I see from just on one of their pages. This is taken directly from the site.

-We have a continuing waiting list for our pups and usually have 5-6 litters a year with our pairs. Females are bred once a year and then have a free heat to recuperate.

-The $700 charge for our pups include full AKC/CKC registration

They state that they test for VWD, but what about the rest?

They also call one of their males an excellent example Warlock.

And could someone please tell me what WKC is?

I concur with all the others. Not enough health & longevity info for me. These dobes seem to be bred for profit only. Not for me.
Thanks y'all. I had feeling I should just trust my first instincts.

My first priority is of course the temperament and then health and longevity. On the other hand I would love to be able to bring in a rescue, pup or adult, when the time is right.

Thanks for all suggestions. One of the breeders listed on the PKC site was Cleo's puppy trainer and worked where she had her ears done. I spoke with her after Cleo's death. She is planning on her next litter sometime in 2008.

Harraden's Dobie Den
are you kidding! Her dogs are great, friendly and very healthy! They test all 13 of their dogs for vWD and several are tested for OFA. All her dogs are registered with AKC and CKC and none of them have white of white factor. Their dogs are all over the states and people have gone back for more than one once they get one. Heck, their dogs are wonderful pets. They don't have to be show dogs to be great dogs.

maybe you should look at the site before you start making judgements. They are excellent breeders. Their dogs are health tested and they are known for longevity in their lines. Might want to look before you judge so harshly. Wonder what people would say about you?
