I had seen on the news this morning that a Samoyed had been poisoned with rat poison believed to have been given to the dog by an animal rights activist.

Does anyone know who the dog was?

(sorry not dobe related but show related not sure where to put this thread)

The Samoyed died. They are unsure if it happened at Westminster or at the shows they were at a few days later. They also didn't know if the dog was actually poisoned by someone or possibly just ingested it by accident.

There is no point. That's what PETA does. They let dogs loose at shows, steal dogs, I've even heard of them burning cars. Because apparently dog shows are torture and the dogs would be happier dead.

So a domesticated animal is happier dead than with a family that loves it? Please keep this from my girl, she's being tortured with a nap in my bed right now and I'd hate for her to know real happiness is found at the bottom of a box of poison.

Animal rights.

I've had an AR nut who constantly tried to let my dogs out into traffic, down to stealing the padlocks on my gates then leaving them open. I live on a VERY busy road.

Jokes on her, not only are my dogs never out unsupervised for more than a minute or two so easily recalled, but they're trained to avoid traffic like the plague. Once, I went out and checked the gates were locked with the loops over the top (they're padlocked, loops over the top AND springed to close automatically) at 9am, let the dogs out, went in to check on my infant son, came back out at 905 and the gates were both wide open, locks gone and springs disconnected.

Ten minutes later, animal control showed up and fined me for dogs roaming at large. When I asked what time the call was made.. it was made before the dogs were even outside. They dropped the fine when that happened, and have actually been assisting the neighbours in securing fencing ever since. Now when I go inside to check on something, the dogs are brought in with me.

There's a reason EVERY decent dog owner here has spare leashes and extra tags on their dogs. We text each other when another dog is out loose, and have kind of a neighbourhood watch on each other's fences. It happens in fits and spurts. Every day for two months multiple dogs will be roaming, and then she stops and all is peaceful. Then she starts up again.

Once, I rescued two dogs who had been jammed to a fence by their collars on a blind corner in the back lane, half hung. It was VERY deliberate, the collar was hooked and looped so the dog's head was jammed down between the boards. I had to cut them loose.

I can't set up a camera because I get literally hundreds to a thousand pedestrians passing the house every day, I live on a major road with a bus stop in front of my house. When we moved in, I deliberately removed the gates so that you have to go to the quiet side street or my back lane to access the yard.

One day I will actually catch her doing it, and then I will nail her to the wall with trespassing, dog endangerment, and all the fines people here have collected for dogs at large. I know perfectly well who she is and she's gone at me verbally for having dangerous dog breeds and too many dogs before. She thinks I'm hoarding, because I have different dogs every 6 months - I foster for rescues.

I just realized that the fence hasn't been touched since I boobytrapped it a few months ago. I haven't had to go out and close the gates. Either that, or she doesn't like Dobermans..

This is insane, i really fear my reaction over the poisoning of my loved ones. I hope it is just a knee jerk point at the AR people, just a sicko. I have no love for peta or AR activist and that stupid Sara Mcglauglin comercial! Styric may your attempted muderer of your pets be run over over by the bus that passes your locked gates!

We have never, to our knowledge, had an incident at our show where a dog has become ill or was harmed as a result of being poisoned. We are ultra cautious to the point where we do not allow dogs to be off lead at any time while at our show. After conversation with the co-owner of the dog in question, it was established that the dog left Georgia on Monday and flew to New York, he was exhibited at our show on Tuesday, and flew to Denver on Wednesday morning where he subsequently became ill on Saturday. Unfortunately, no autopsy was performed, so there are a lot of unanswered questions. No other animal which attended our show was reported to our show veterinarians with any incident of serious illness. We have been made aware that no rodent poison is used at the Piers and pest control is maintained through trapping.

If he was at the Rocky Mtn Cluster show in Denver, there were a few dogs that got sick, or so I heard. We did a rescue event there and one of our volunteer's Danes got sick and she mentioned that a few other dogs had too.

Eta: should have read all the responses, looks like Dobelove mentioned this already.

Cruz was so beautiful--inside and out. I have seen countless photos of him snuggling on the couch of his handler's RV with the handler's daughter, and he was truly loved by many people. My heart goes out to them. I only spent time with him on a few occasions, but he won me over instantly. :(

The show that Cruz was at after West had a few dogs get sick. A member on here (well former; Chiya) basenji got really sick and still isn't doing great, as well as a few other dogs. I heard the show site wasn't cleaned properly after a livestock show. :( I wonder why they didn't have a necropsy peformed; yet they say it was rat poison.
This is something I just can't understand. Why not find out?

There are types of rat poison that will not show up on necropsy. That many days after, it's very possible the vet explained that the poison itself would be long out of the system and all they'd have are the damage left afterwards.

How sad for the owner, and the poor dog.

Why so quick to blame animal activists though? Sure, there are a lot of nutters out there, but seems like a bit of a paranoid assumption! Would they really only target only one dog at the whole show?

A dobermann was poisoned at Crufts years and years ago, I believe it was suspected to be another jealous/upset dobe exhibitor...but I cant remember if it was ever confirmed.

This was exactly my first thought!

Oh God, what an awful thing to have happen. I am so very sorry for those people. I had no idea, though that people that state they are animal activists do NOT want people to have any kind of pet whatsoever. That's just crazy. I liked the post above about Dobie napping in bed!:noidea:

I don't think they did an autopsy since the vet discovered he had been poisoned prior to his death when they were still treating symptoms and trying to diagnose the issue. An autopsy likely wouldn't provide any new information at all. The vet told them that given the poison used, it had to have taken place 3-5 days prior to his death, so it could have occurred at Westminster or at the very beginning of the shows in Denver.

I don't know if this case was different than normal since they had to get across the country in a short period of time, but Robert usually travels in an RV and doesn't stay in a hotel. I know some thought maybe he ingested poison at a hotel, others think it could have been consumed at the show, and others think it was done maliciously. Regardless, I'm sure there's a lot of behind the scenes information that we don't know.

In any event, his death is just heartbreaking. That dog was a beauty inside and out, and he was loved by many. I can't imagine the heartbreak of losing a young, healthy dog so suddenly to something like poison. :(

I have heard of other exhibitors letting benched dogs go too, though again only heresay. I know for a fact some dogs have been solen from shows here and sold on :( I always watch my dogs carefully at shows or anywhere else for that matter. Can't be too cautious nowadays.

Did I hear someone say the dog in question had been surgically de-barked?
