Uti

Hey all,

I brought my dog to the vet couple days ago for her final vaccination shots and all went well. She's almost 4 months now and she's 35 pounds.. 11 pounds up from last visit. Anyway, she's been having a crusty/goopy vulva for quite some time now and I addressed that to the vet, and she said that puppies normally get little vaginitis infections and they sometimes dont really, completely clear up until I get her spayed.. Is this true?!?! She said if I give her antibiotics, it's quite possible that the dog will just get another infection again. She already had a round of antibiotics, but I personally don't think it really worked that well. This is starting to bother me since Dolce is having accidents in the house, ESPECIALLY ON MY BED!!! LOL.. And I've read on this board that if your dog starts to pee right infront of you and it knows that's not the right thing to do, it could likely be a sign of UTI.

So my question to you all is, is my vet wrong?

Isabelle was the queen of UTIs when she was a puppy. It got to the point of where I'd call the vet and tell them she was sympomatic and I'd drop off peein the am. That afternoon I'd pick up antibiotics. She was numerous rounds of antibiotics when she was a puppy and different ones. Can't remember now which ones, but I'd probablly recognize the names. I'd get a second opinion. utis can be painful - she needs meds. They can go up into the kidneys and really cause problems. I don't know about the spayed thing. Isabelle was spayed around 6 months - she has had utis since then - one was last novemberish. They have been much less frequent but she is also on phenopopaline (sp?) commonly refered to as pp pills for incontinance. Hope that helps a bit - but I'd definately want another opinion.

Stress can bring on UTI's so it is possible that the last shots have done this,Chelsie was a bit like that first it was when we took her from her mom, then her shots, even her first season but every time she needed a course of meds to clear her up so i would certainly be back to the vet,Chelsie finally grew out of it and i reckon Dolce will do the same.

Wonder if the Crandberry pill would help a dog with UTI's ????? after the anti botic treatment from the vet. Would be hard to get a dog to drink the juice.

We did mix cranberry juice in Isabelle's water - she liked it - don't know how much it helped or if it did.

UTI's can be persistant and require more than one course of antiobiotics. So I think in many cases it isn't that the dog/puppy gets ANOTHER uti as much as the first wasn't adequately treated to begin with.

Also, it's not unusual for puppy bitches to have inverted vulvas-this creates an ideal breeding ground for bacteria of all sorts. Generally these are the cases that tend to resolve themselves after the first heat.

I'd talk to another vet..it's just not right to leave a situation untreated if the problem exists to the point where the vulva is crusty from discharge, etc. all the time.
