Anyone's female dobe ever have urinary incontinence? Jett (she's spayed & 7 1/2 yrs old) started with his about 6 months ago, we got her on DES & it worked for a while. Then it started again, & we had to go to twice a week. Seems to be working well. Just wanted to get a little feedback from other dobe owners. Thanks.

there are a variety of things that can be done --

first, she should have a urinarlysis run just to ensure there isnt a urinary tract infection that is underlying and causing the problem

some people have good luck with DES, but other people use PPA (proin), which is the more common drug to use. you can see if your vet can try your dog on this.

some other people have a lot of luck eliminating grains from their dogs diet and having that improve the incontinence - you can search for grain free (or low grain) dog foods, or look into a raw diet (i dont know what you feed now).

if the DES is working well for now, good luck and hopefully this will be all you need!

yes - the theory behind that is that soy contains phytoestrogens, which could mimic the place of real estrogens that are missing in the body and tighten the urinary sphincter muscles.

cant hurt :)

Good luck! Hope you can find a cure. If all else is ruled out, I have heard and Lexy's breeder did also mention that he sees incontinence quite a bit in older spayed bitches. Personally Lexy is my first unaltered bitch, and I've never had that problem with my other dogs, I have a 7 year old spayed bitch now (mutt) no prob's. But I'm know my breeder has seen alot more dogs in his lifetime then I have.

My girl also has this. She takes DES also. Originally it was 2 pills per week, but I have since weened her down to 1/2 pill per week and have not seen any problems. I will eventually take that 1/2 pill away and see what happens from there.

I haven't yet, but will have in a couple of days as I have a 6yr. old red tripod coming in who is spay incontinent. She currently is on DES 2x a week. That's where I have a problem. I talked to my vet about DES, and they won't prescribe it, haven't for a while. According to them, it is a synthenic hormone (sp) that can cause breast cancer. So, it looks like she will be going on Proin which has to be given every day. Anyone have experience with Proin?

Hmm my understanding was that DES was banned from Human use but was still available to the Vetrinary community. And yes your Vet is right it has been proven to cause problems in humans thats why it is so important with any medication to only give the least amount that is needed.

As I said I am trying to ween my girl off of the medication completely, I will let you know how it works out. I have never tried Proin - sorry.

Good Luck

Thanks for the response. I understand why you are trying to wean off DES. I just wonder - if it causes problems with humans, I think I would be a bit leary about using it for my dobe. It always seems like you cure one thing and cause another.

I agree 100% but when faced with a choice of having her Pee all over or the possibility of the medication having side effects than I have to choose the medication.

Same thing with us humans, Prozac, Viagra, Heart Medicine, The Pill, all of this medicine has side effects and sometimes it is even pulled off the shelfs years after being sold to people daily. Sad indeed. :(

I am not sure if there is any solution but for me I just try to be as informed as possible and make an educated decision with facts. Life is tough sometimes, decisions need to be made.
