Two Questions

Hi Guys,
Since this is my first dobe, i kinda freak out when the littlest things happen. Anyway, my first question, my dog is on the raw food diet and i know its suppose to help them grow slower and more regular so they don't get bone problems later on in life. He's now 8 months and he still walks and runs like puppy. He trips over his own feet more than ever and he "lopes" really funny too. Like he lopes like a cowboy walking (without bending knees). He's also a pretty slow dog. I can still out run him. Now will he eventually start running fast and loping normally or do you think this could be a Hip Dysplasia case?

Second question. I left my dog at a doggy day care for two nights when i went away for a weekend and ever since then he's been acting strange. First he had a bad bad case of diarrhea for about a week. And now he's not pooing at all. Last time he did poo, it was really really dark and he struggled alot. Its been a full day and a half without anything now. He seems to be eating alright (hasn't dropped any weight). Is this normal for dogs or is something stuck inside? He's still as active as he normally is as well.

Any suggestions?
Thank you!

Males are slower to mature than bitches and the larger the male the slower they are. And as far as bowel movements....if he's not having them then he needs to see the vet NOW in my opinion. Please keep us posted!
A full 24 plus hours is too long. I would have him seen ASAP in case of an obstruction or another underlying issue. Do you know how much they were feeding him at the day care? I would be concerned about gastric bloat. Dobermans are prone to this.

Hip dysplasia isn't common in dobermans, but it *DOES* pop up occasionally. What you're describing sounds a lot like "bunny hopping", which can indeed be a symptom of HD. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to have your vet take a look at him, maybe do some hip xrays.

Not pooping is NOT normal, so he definitely needs to be seen by a vet anyway.
From your description it sounds to me like your boy's got some orthopedic issues, at a minimum. You should NOT be able to outrun him, and he may very well be in pain from the way you describe his movement. Does Rossco's vet know about these issues? If not, he/she needs to know ASAP. Make a vet visit. Oh, and Rossco should be pooping about an hour (give or take) after he eats. Good luck and keep us posted, ok?
Only answer from me is--- if in doubt see the vet right away.
Well, some good news. He ate all his food and he did go bathroom!!!
So i guess nothing is really blocking his bowels, maybe he's just a little constipated or something. Vet appointments on Monday so lets see if it gets better before then.
As for the running and hips, i'm hoping its just because he's a slow grower and isn't cordinated. He doesn't show signs of pain (ie, going up and down stairs easily and comfortably on his own will...running in the backyard at his own will)
Anyway, thanks for the info and i'll keep you all updated!
Any updates yet on your pup? Skyler used to trot really stiff legged, so we had X-rays done on her. Everything on the X-rays looked fine, and the vet just thought it was because she was still growing. She is still a little stiff, but better. I asked the vet again few months ago, and she said it could just be just that she has a stiffer gait than some dobes, since everthing on the X-rays were fine.
Sorry guys,
Its been a while
Rosco is now 10 months old now. I've got my boy on Nzymes and Flexicose, which has helped Rosco's run SOOO MUCH!! He can out run me any day now, but he still walks really funny. We're going to a dog chiropractor tomorrow and we'll see what he says. We'll probably get some xrays done as well... He shows no signs of pain going up or down stairs and running around. (no bunny hopping)
Maybe just some misalignment or something. We'll get xrays to hopefully confirm he doesn't have hip dysplasia
Give us an update on him after you get back from the chiropractor. Hope everything is okay.
Hope all is going well. I know with Spirit being such a big boy.. 27 3/4" and 96lbs to 100 lbs. He had a funny walk too when he was growing up but as he got older it corrected it's self.. But vet visit is always a good way to go to make sure..
