Okay, we're back and I have to say that it wasn't what I expected. Thought the Vet was gonna use the tampon or the cap method. He used some rolled cotton and gauze and taped his ears and head like crazy. He wants it to remain that way for 14days and then bring him back. I have read a bit about posting and am not in a hurry to call it done. Me and the wife are wondering, should we post for 1 week on and 1 week off or 2 weeks on and 1 week off? We may consider redoing the posting that the Vet just did as I don't like how the tape is wrapped around his head. Pics are attached.

How much experience does the vet have with doberman ears? Don't take them down, you will never get them up right without some kind of knowledge or experience with taping!!!

uggghhhh - that is awful!! What are these vets thinking???

Where are you at? We need to see if we can find someone to help you post ears.

I post approx 5 days up, 10 minutes down (just to clean and dry), 5 days back up. If I can get a week that is great, but I've found that 5 days is about what I get. I continue till the ears are done and post at least through teething.

Kilo's dad,

Where are you? On this forum there are people all over the country who have experience with ear and posting them--that is the stupidest looking post job I've seen in nearly 50 years of posting Doberman (and a lot of other cropped breeds) ears.

We must be able to find someone not far from you that can help teach you how to properly post ears.

Not sure. Is there anyone from Pittsburgh here who has experience with posting that could meet and help us?

I agree and felt that way when he was wrapping his ears. I am located in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. If someone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

I got in contact with an old friend of mine who has owned several dobes and has many years experince with posting. He said to bring Kilo over and he'll show me the right way to post. Me mentioned using paper towel rolls and tape? Either way, I trust his method more than the Vet that did the original posting yesterday. What type of tape do I need to purchase?

Don't just pull all that tape off, get a glue dissolver of some kind, it will hurt the puppy to pull tape off. But it should come off, that is the weirdest taping job I've ever seen, and I've seen some weird ones.

For those who don't understand why responsible breeders have all this done themselves before the new owner gets the puppy, this is part of the reason.

:) You just can't let it go. ;)
You are missing the point here. It's not about the responsible BREEDER, it's about the responsible OWNER. The breeder's job is: 1. crop, 2. heal, 3. INSTRUCT. The owner's job is to make the ears stand properly.
It takes months for the ears to stand, and if my puppy is now in CA, should I move there until the ears stand????

We pulled all of that tape off (I felt sooo bad for Kilo). The posting with the paper towel rolls is fairly easy. The challenging part is taping to where Kilo won't keep shaking the posts out. We'll see if the posts stay in thru the night as he is trying any and everything to get them out of his ears. I'll post pics tomorrow.

The absolute best tape to use is Johnson and Johnson Zonas 1" wide tape. It is not easy to find, but your RX might be able to order it for you. If not, ask your local Podiatrist if they would sell you some - I buy it by the case from my neighbor across the street - he is a foot Dr :) . You will probably go through at least 1/2 a case ( a case is 12 rolls), so it is worth buying a case of 12.

I am in the Philly area.......... a little too far to help with posting - LOL! If you still need help, I can see if I can find someone in the DPCA willing to post ears. There are some members in Pittsburgh, but I'm not familiar with their names or if they post ears. I don't know how far you are from Muncy - there are a couple of breeders there that could maybe help. Usually people will charge their cost for supplies or a nominal fee for posting. I charge the cost of supplies.
