Long time, no post. Our 6 1/2 year old male dobie Winston was just diagnosed with cancer. I thought he was panting an inordinate amount and decided to take him in for an echocardiogram. His heart function is great but the doctor discovered a 3.5 cm chemodectoma right by his aorta. We don't know whether it is malignent or benign nor how fast it is growing. We do know that it wasn't there at the last echocardiogram 1 1/2 years ago.

We met with the oncologist yesterday and the x-ray didn't show any masses in the lungs so it appears that the growth is localized. We have just started Palladia treatment which they hope will stop the growth or even shrink the tumor. The doctor has provided no guarantees but it appears to have the most chance of keeping Winston alive.

I was wondering if anyone else had dealt with a chemodectoma and/or treated with Palladia. I sent a message to Marge04 to get some details of her experience in 2010.

I don't know anything about this nor have I heard of it, but in reading your post I wanted you to know I feel for what you are going through. Our Dobermans become such a part of us.
Please continue to report and let us know the outcome or progress. It helps when people share and I for one would like to know how Wonston fares.

Can't help you on this cancer don't know a thing about it. In fact I've lost one dog and one cat to cancer (lymphoma in both cases--my Aussie who was nearly 13 so I opted for palliative care only and the cat was 13 and we did the same thing with him but he had masses in his lungs which basically meant that the cancer had started elsewhere and was beyond treating, his hemoglobin count was incredibly low--it was a wonder he hadn't dropped dead from lack of oxygen already.

Good luck--do keep us posted.
