I have a question about docked tails. My little girl's tail is already docked. The problem though is last week she bit her tail hard enough to put a nice little tooth hole in it. We took her into the vet and it was very infected. (Note to self don't just put medication on the little cut while camping, take into vet right away next time) She is on antiboitics now which is good. But the vet said that she needs to have her tail re-docked. Number one it is way to long for a dobie, number two, they (vet or breeder) didn't do it correctly.

I already talked to my regular vet about this. Is there more pain involved when they have to re-dock a 2 year old dog? Will she have to take it easy for atleast a week? Will they have to keep my baby over night?

We will probably take her in to get the re-dock done in the spring. This is the first time since we've had her that she bit her tail that hard.

Your advice and answers would be very much appreciated.

I've seen labs get it done and come home the same day. The tail was pretty screwed and is probally a whole different story but hopefully it wouldn't take to long to heal. Its more pain but if its infected adn may be that way again it'll be worth it to do it. good luck:)

Now she need's it redocked because of the injury? I just don't understand? Does he think she will do it again? If he plans for spring, he must not be too worried.

If the reason is purely for the fact that your vet feels her tail is too long for dobe....honesly who cares???? She isn't a show dog. Does it really matter to you if her tal is long? If the reason is cosmetic, I my opinion (only) I wouldn't bother, it will be painful to her, there are inherent risks in anestetic, ( which notebly things seldomn happen, but there is the off chance) why put her through it, if it isn't neccassary?

Anyhow, glad she is doing better!

It is not for cosmetic reasons at all. Where they docked her tail it is where all the nerve endings are at. She is always nibbling on her tail. She has never bit it hard enough until last week camping. The vet isn't the one that wants to wait until spring it's us that wants to wait. Like I said she has never bit it hard enough so hubby and I believe it can wait until spring. From now until the end of the year isn't the best part for us money wise. We have birthdays one week after another until Christmas.

If she bites it that hard again she will go in right away to have it done. I love her little nub just the way it is, I wouldn't want to change it unless I had to. But I am thinking we will have too. Sorry for the miss understanding.

Ohh I see. Okay then, I get it now! (Gotta spell things out for me sometimes!!)
It won't be too bad for her then, They will probably keep her over night to make sure the stitches hold for the first day and then she will be free to go. Shouldn't bother her too much, They take out a vertabrae, so she will have a skin cushion. (hard to explain, you probably know what I mean)
