On one of the horse forums I'm on there was a thread about dobermans started.
Lots of good advice was given - what health problems the breed has, a few good breeders were mentioned.
Then one person asked if they would be able to have an option re: ears being cropped.
Common consensus was no that most (if not all) reputable breeders in the US crop their puppies ears.
And then one person chimed in with (in a nutshell from the posting):
My breeder is reputable. I'm on my 3rd dog. They are all long-lived and healthy. Both parents are on premises. Breeder lets you pick the puppy, I've picked all 3 of mine around 3 weeks old. And I've requested not to crop ears so they never cropped mine.
I replied that honestly that does not sound like a reputable breeder as par the breed standards and what is expected from a breeder.
Am I being too critical?
Red flags for me were:
Allowing the new owner to pick the puppy.
Giving option of cropping ears.
Both parents on premises.
Now one I could forgive (both parents being on premises or the breeder giving you the option to leave ears uncropped) but all three from the same 'breeder?'
To me there's too many red flags for me to believe that the breeder the poster talked about was reputable.
