Sniffing question

645 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  lanabana
I have a question. Bumpy has been sniffing Callie a lot lately, obsessed with her girl parts (for lack of a better word). Callie is spayed so I am wondering if this is normal intact male behavior? Should I stop him when he does it because I notice she tries to block herself with her tail (poor baby). Any input on this subject?

There's no reason why you can't teach him a "no sniff" or a "leave it" command. I use both, and that would be one of the key times.
I see it as a very natural thing for dogs to do.. depending on how old the two are.. and how long they have been together also could be the answer.. also has Callie had any problem with blocked anal glands or tract infection that Bumpy could be smelling? It may be something to check out...
I will start the "leave it" command. He knows what leave it means so that should work. I just didn't know if it was normal behavior because my other male has never done anything of the sort. I have been wondering if something is bothering Callie because she has been pushing her behind up to me a lot to scratch her and pat her. Kind of a pitbull habit though, so I wasn't sure if she was being neurotic or if something was bothering her. Thanks for pointing that out, I will have the vet check her out just to be sure. Time for an exam anyway.
