Rizzo’s first cardio check up

Our vets office now has a floating cardiologist, which is great because I’m way behind on her first check up. They were surprisingly able to get her in quickly and we saw the Doctor today. They did an Eco and everything looked good, she’s currently in a holter monitor. The only thing I’m not super thrilled with is they basically bandaged her, put a surgical net on her to cover exposed wires and clipped the pack to her neck. In the past the always had a stretchy vest to cover everything with a pocket for the pack.

Also, when we got into the room, she immediately jumped straight up and onto the counter! I was totally caught off guard as she never does this. The only thing I can think is the normal room we go into has a bench to sit on and she always jumps up and sits on that with me, this one didn’t so I guess the counter was the next best thing. She was pretty proud of herself! Lol

Congrats on the normal echo! Here's to a good holter report, too :)
That sure is an interesting way to hook things on. ;-) I have been known to tape around the body, but have not seen the unit by the neck before.
I might take a t-shirt or something to put over that mesh, too.

I put a fleece jacket over her to cover everything and help hold the box up so it’s not dangling from her neck…that’s what’s annoying her.

I'm so jealous your vet has a floating cardiologist! I've been on the wait list for an appointment for Sherlock (he turned two in September) for quite a few months at the four Chicagoland Cardiologists my vet referred us to. Fingers crossed for a good holter report, too. 🙂

For folks reading along, if you are needing an annual screen you can also look around for kennel clubs or shows holding Health clinics. They typically offer a traveling Cardiologist doing echos. Within 30 days prior to that appointment, rent a holter monitor and bring the results along with you for the cardiologist to review. I am lucky in that the local kennel club offers health clinics twice/year with all the required OFA screening (cardio, hips, eyes, thyroid, etc). Me and 3 other Dobie owners all chipped in on a used Alba holter to save even more money.

The Alba monitors are pretty easy to put on and most dogs tolerate them pretty well. Even Ava, who has been known to chew harnesses if left to her own devices:

That's great news, re: the normal echo! I hope she has a normal holter, too.

I haven't seen a holter attached that way before but that method actually might work really well for Cypress, who insists on sleeping on her back. haha

Not sure if you've tried Veterinary Specialty Center at all (or recently), but they've added a second cardiologist so there is more availability now. I just checked availability for a new patient, and they have them as soon as June 6th.

haha yep! He then proceeded to use his cast as a battering weapon on the crate door. Never mind the fact that we were just outside doing training while the lawn company was mowing…great big loud scary distraction! Came inside for more training on new stuff, then chewed on a bully for 20 minutes. He’s a demon 😂

Naturally!!! Nevermind all the physical and mental work we do, puppy jail is a prison and we are just mean wardens as far as they are concerned haha. God forbid they have one enforced nap between all the excitement. I swear the spice of the red ones has me very happy I love blacks. All you red parents are brave!!!

I had looked into the one in Bannockburn when I was doing all of my research, but they gave me a hard time when I inquired about holters and expressed that I would want one of those done, too. The person on the cardio team who called me back essentially said I likely wouldn't be able to get one unless they deemed it necessary after the echo, which I didn't like. I decided to make appointments/get on the cancellation lists for MedVet, Premier Vet Group (Grayslake), and Blue Pearl in Northfield.

Yep the red ones are definitely spicy! Fortunately Maui was pretty easy to crate train, he just puts up a protest when he thinks he’s missing out on something cool. Rizzo on the other hand was an absolute menace! She would howl for what seemed like forever…I remember having to go outside to get away from her because I was so frustrated.
It’s really interesting to me to see how each dog is different and they excel at different things Maui crate trained like a dream, Rizzo not so much….Rizzo was a fantastic car rider from early on, Maui is not….Maui is very bitey…Rizzo wasn’t. Sully was perfect and Athena gave me a hard time for EVERYTHING 😂

This is something I try to remind myself. For anything that is a challenge (not going over threshold and barking because we are somewhere exciting) there are things that they takes to like they have been doing it forever. (waiting for me to say okay to leave the crate, the front door, or eat) My first dog was a terrible chewer. He would destroy things left out and things not left out. Blitz doesn't chew anything with gusto, he just mouths it a little and thinks it is a great fun game to run around with it. I think Blitz will end up being my perfect one. I really think the universe said, "let's make sure she is good and hooked on Dobermans for the rest of her life."

Here's the link to the Alba Holter that R&BD referred to: ALBA Medical - Holter Monitoring Company

The biggest cost is initial kit $1395 + vest $199. I thought the service fees for holter analysis were really cheap @ $40-90 depending on type. Heck, I can't even walk in our vet office front door without getting charged $200! 😬
