I love rainy days...except when it's time for a puppy potty break.

It's pouring outside, and it has been for the past two and a half hours or so. I took Apollo out just as the first few drops were falling and I thought to myself, "Yessss, we beat the rain." He pottied like a good boy, and we came back inside. I had already put up his water for the night, so I was hoping he could outlast the rain and then we could go out for another potty break after it stopped.

Well...I was wrong. About an hour and a half later after his evening nap, he went up to the door and started whining. So I snapped on the leash and as soon as I opened the door, he turned back around to go inside. I carried him out to his potty spot in the rain and begged him to go, but no such luck. We stood out there for about five minutes before coming back just inside the door for a minute. Then I took him back out...this went on for about 20minutes or so. I KNEW he had to go, HE knew he had to go...yet he refused to go in the pouring rain.

Of course, the second we came back in for good...he went. Right on my freshly cleaned carpet.

How do I get him to like, or at least tolerate the rain? I never know whether to keep him out in it (since he frantically runs for the door when we're out in it, pulling on his leash and jumping all around like a psycho), cause I always feel bad forcing him. He doesn't even like it blowing in his direction...let alone standing out in it long enough to potty.

I just keep thinking...it rains a lot in October...

When Ava was being house trained it was in the middle of winter.... It didn't decide to snow that year until I brought her home, so go figure. Anyway, she hated the snow just as much as I hated being out there so when there was snow on the ground, it was a chore to get her to go. The only thing that seemed to work was holding my ground. Much easier said than done, I know. :)

I picked a spot for her and would always bring her to the same area anytime she had to go and would say 'go potty' when we were there. It didn't take her long to figure out that 'go potty' meant, 'hurry up and pee' and that seemed to help her remember why she was out in the freezing cold to begin with. I would also bring a treat with me to give her once she finished. There were many times when I know she'd have to go and when she went outside, she'd pull and whine, trying to get back in but I'd have to stand my ground(no matter how cold!) and not give in until she went.

Chi can be a booger about going out when it's raining too and that is when I thank the inventor of the vari kennel :) If I know she has to go and she doesn't I will bring her in (I don't want to get soaked any more than she does :) ) and put her in her kennel for 15 or 20 min and then take her back out, we keep up that repition until she finally goes.

Geez you bunch of novices, didn't you know that dobermans melt in the rain? They are just trying to protect themselves!

Heeeheh! Lexy drives me INSANE when it is potty time in the rain, usually I have to stand over her with an umbrella getting soaked with my dear husband looks and laughs on from inside the nice dry house. MUAHHAHAHAH!

Interesting, Sasha just deals with it. we had a big rain storm about a month ago so it was warm and when i let her and the other 2 outside, they did their business and got to come in. She had to stay out till she went, she learned a valuable lesson. if its wet......go pee really really fast and i can come in quicker.....lol sometimes if its raining she will run out squat to pee and start walking back still peeing!!

I agree with Krys, they need to learn to deal with it. We got our girl back in December and it was starting to get cold. In april, we were still working on patty training and it was raining like every few days. I had no choice but to tough it out and stand with her out in the rain, just to get her to go.

Eventually, We took our walks in the rain, we played out side in the rain and now rain does not bother her now. Even if its raining, she still wants to go to the dog park to play. They don't melt as I thought before. The great thing is that they are wash and wear. A few minutes with a towel and they are as good as new. When I had my elkhound, it would take hours for him to dry. If I had a choice of cleaning up pee/poop on the carpet or standing in the rain for a few minutes, my Significant Other thinks I should stand in the rain.

Her's an old shot of my girl a 4 months with her bomber jacket.

Trying to link a picture from my server for the first time, if it doesn't work I will try something else..

Adorable picture!! Apollo has a winter coat that I'm dying to try out. He also has hoodies and a few U of M t-shirts (have to show that school spirit!). I don't know if it took your puppy a while to get used to the idea of wearing clothes, but with him it's as if they're second skin.

I still can't get over how "human" he seems at times. Just yesterday I was standing in the kitchen eating a granola bar and he came over to me and sat down as if saying, "look! I'm sitting for you and waiting patiently, now give me some!". I said the usual "Goooood boyyy!" and went about eating my snack. At that point, he grunted, stormed over to his food dish, stuck his paw in it and spilled it all everywhere...after which he marched into his crate and layed down. I just stood there completely mesmorized. He looked like a little child having a hissy fit in his little Michigan t-shirt :)...silly puppies.

I'm from Sterling Heights originally, but I have now moved to Ann Arbor while finishing up school and trying to decide what I want to do after I graduate...which could take a while to figure out.

I understand that. I hope to go back to school next fall! I keep bouncing between a vet and a court reporter!

I think Ann Arbor is kinda up and over from me! I am really not sure where it is. My husband had surgery there when he was a kid. I swear I can get lost in my own back yard. Lol. Sad but true!
