Question on markings

I was looking a some pictures of FiFi when she was younger.... It seems like her rear legs were full black then, and now there's more rust on the side that should be all black...I think someone asked a while ago about the fur on the base of the ears loosing color, but I can't remember what the responses said.
Help, anyone?

Could you possibly post pics of before and after of FiFI's leg, just to show the difference and where it is exactly changed.
I know my pups have the Black "upside down" paw prints ontop of thier feet, most black marking retreat as they get older, and leave you the standard line marks. Some dogs have very poor marking making them appear "Muddy". There have even been a few all black dobermans.

As for the base of the ear, It can look gray at times. Dogs age they lose thier puppy fur, and all of the puppy under coat, Giving way to the coarse black hair. The spot near the base of the ears is one of the last to do this. That spot can be somewhat bald looking in some dogs do to thinner coats.

I think I know what they're asking about, although it's hard to explain or visualize. On some dogs, you'll see what almost looks like a brownish stripe that extends from just above the hock joint to the front of the rear leg.
I don't know exactly why it happens, but it's not uncommon and it doesn't seem to get any worse.

Hmm I'm trying to picture what you mean...

No Pictures Sorthund?
I need pictures too - Isabelle has black on below her hock but above her hock is tanish with some black mixed in for maybe a 2 or 3 inches then its black again. Is that the part your talking about the side of the leg or the view from strait back?

Exactly -- does it affect them in the conformation ring?
I'll see if I can post some pics next week - I'm busy sending my daughter off to Paris the next few days - I'll get back on this.... Thanks!

!
I wouldn't worry about it. It's not at all unusual to see dogs with this in the ring, and I can't see where it holds them back at all.
Only that it kind of breaks the flow of the line of the rear legs...

I think AT MOST it would be considered a very minor cosmetic issue. Virtually every show dog I can think of has at least one fault more serious than that..there are way bigger fish to fry in the ring.

When Razzle was a younger bitchette, she had a marking oddity that I thought was far more distracting, and even that did very little to hold her back. At that point she had a lot of rust on the back of her elbows, as well as a rust patch on her brisket right underneath where her elbows laid. You didn't notice it too much when she was stacked, but when she was gaited, you saw the rust patches under her elbows right away. I thought it was pretty unsightly. That's basically gone away as she matured, but she picked up Best Puppy at three specialties and a 3 point major while the marking aberration was present.

Well that's good to hear.... FiFi has those big rust markings in her "elbow pits" too, and I was told they grow into them, so they dissapear. Some dye them when at shows, just because it can be too distracting.
Sounds like Razzle did very well - what a great girl she is!

Razzle is the only puppy I've ever had that went through the "orange armpit" experience, but it did go away over time with her. All that's left now is a really, really thin line of rust on the very edge of her elbow, but you have to look pretty closely to see it.

A friend has been sending me some old pictures, and a couple of them showed a dog with this very problem. So I figured I'd post them so everyone could see what we've been talking about.

This is Ch. Donneridge Charcoal Sketch, from sometime in the late 1970's...not the best pic, but you can see right above his hock joints where there's rust on the outside of his hind leg instead of black.

Ahh, now I see!
Thank you Murreydobe.... I haven't had time to take any pictures, but that one shows it perfectly. I was just asking because FiFi's co-breeder noticed it, and we'll probably start showing her this summer, if she'll ever learn to stand instead of sitting so politely.
I've seen this from ringside. I don't think it was a big deal.
