Is it just me or does it feel like puppy season? I feel like I have seen several well bred litters being born recently!
Personally I want to share that Nadia's bestie Dalia just gave birth on July 15 to 10 beautiful, healthy puppies. 7 males, 3 females, all black! Tails were done yesterday, and though this is the breeder's very first litter and the bitch's very first litter things are running smoothly. Mamma Dalia is doing a fantastic job, Catherine has very little intervention to do, she hasn't had to rotate much - everyone is putting on weight and growing fairly evenly.

I need to convince her to get on DT lol!

No... It's not just you. I've had puppy fever for months. And... You not helping!! LOL.

There is nothing like seeing a litter of tiny puppies pig piling while mommy keeps them under a watchful eye. Beautiful.

I'd better not show these to my wife. She's been bugging me to get a new pup, as McCoy approaches 5. I'm hoping to hold off until next summer. Raising a pup in Portland in the winter is a real pain with the postings and our continual rain.

This time I am going to do a 180. I will be looking for a red bitch. In 45 years, I have never owned a red Dobe or a female Dobe. Probably one of Michelle's girls. I've already chatted with her about the possibility. It should be a challenge. I am glad that I have all the folks here to lean on!

Thanks for the pics. (I think)

A Red girl? You must be a little nuts John! :grin2:
Although I cannot blame you. My mother adores the reds. And long before I knew much about the breed I wanted a flop eared red... By the time DT set me straight in my knowledge about the breed and my researching led to fruition I was leaning black, with cropped ears.

Maybe one day I'll have a red of my own! My dream is to someday own a well bred Fawn. It warms my heart to know my Nadia is related to dobebug's Toady!

Luckily I've managed to resist the pull of puppy fever so far because I already have quite a bit on my plate planned with Nadia LOL.
And I decided to introduce little Vanya to tracking... Did a scent pad with her for the first time yesterday and she enjoyed it - and seemed to be talented for it!

So sweet the pics are!! Little babes and a proud mama.

I personally do not have puppy fever as Sugar is approaching 7 months old. His brain is still pea sized but it may have grown a millifraction lol. He is on his way to becoming a good boy and he is already sweet as can be.

"A Red girl? You must be a little nuts John"

Yeah... Quite a few people have said that to me. bug tells me that Michelles red bitches, as well bred as they are for temperament, sometimes have a really "ornery' streak. I've had several pushy dogs. So, that does not bother me at all.

My concern? My very mellow current youngest is intact and will remain that way unless specific medical issues dictate otherwise.
I have had rescue females in the past with no issues living with intact males. Yet, they were always spayed.

I would spay any girl that I got eventually. Still... all the best info that I have read suggests allowing her to experience 1-2 "seasons". Even with my castrated dogs, I let them go at least 2 years before surgery. I am just a bit nervous having a dog with balls having to house with a girl who will go into heat twice. Not so much about an "oops" pregnancy, more just about the frustration of the two.

I could always house McCoy with my son. But, if The Sheriff is still alive, they require hands on attention.

I am sure that I can figure it out. Just running it around in my nutty brain.

I am going to be a 67 yo. and a Dobe bitch neophyte! LOL

Ok, I'm a neophyte at this...why do the red females get such a bad rap? Mocha is the sweetest, most loving girl in the world and I wouldn't trade her for a million bucks (seriously). She was challenging till around 6 months - to 1 year old but most issues were my inexperience and once we go that out of the way, smooth sailing :)

John, go for it :)

LOL TN...

I don't think it's a "bad rap". You just said that Mocha was "challenging".

I am pretty sure that's what the pretty much loving comments are all about. Apparently, that was your experience also.

I have had some pretty challenging dogs. Even the hardest of them, I loved to death (theirs).

I have never had a red female but I had a black female lovebug! She was definitely more stubborn than Sugar until she was about 18 months. Then she was the best girl!! So well behaved.

I found she was more mature than Sugar is at 7 months. He is much more goofy while she was quite serious.

Coco was affectionate on her terms. She would come for it and then leave when she had enough. Sugar loves affection. He sits in my lap and wants to kiss me incessantly. Sugar is silly and all about love.

This could change as he matures but there have been definite differences between them in these first 7 months. I wasn't ready to have another female yet but in the future I wouldn't hesitate.

Go for it John!!

You know that Sugar is almost ready to enter teenagerhood, don't you?

The sweetness isn't likely to change, but his brain will probably shrink again. Or at least go through a prolonged pause in its development. LOL

Their memory disappears first....

John,

Once we were introduced to positive reinforcement (yeah, I was old school) and we realized that Mocha was super treat and praise motivated, working with her became...simple. I've said this before, but I had to learn as much as, if not more, than Mocha and after 5+ years, I'm still learning.
I think that by "challenging", what I mean is, neither my wife and I were quite prepared for the level of energy and the intelligence that a Doberman puppy brings into the house and the constant work and attention they need but boy oh boy, we learned fast LOL. And, I don't think I'm telling anyone here anything they don't already know ;)

OK, back to those thousands of puppies in the first post. Ten is a huge number! Glad mama and pups are doing well.

I want to know why baby puppies tend to sleep with their tongues hanging out. Is it because they know they're adorable when they look like that?

Sigh, yes. Very nice litters with beautiful puppies available. And for the first time in 6 years I have no one showing at home. Everyone is finished, with the only show in the horizon being Nationals. After that nothing.

However the reality is that adding one more to my 5 would throw off the balance. Besides showing, we had been doing lots of agility classes with the dogs. So now, we have 4 dogs competing in agility and we trial 1-2 times a month. It has been great! Jessie (age 7) finished 2 UKI titles last weekend. Kayla has several Qs. Prophet is improving. Mya completed her year as a "special" and without any training in over a year got an ACT1 and is a standout in class. Jossie is 10 and "retired".

While we love puppies, the first priority is the dogs under my roof right now.

Mel asked : I want to know why baby puppies tend to sleep with their tongues hanging out.:

I have read on this subject for several years Mel , it has many effects on them maturing ,

I didn’t know this till I read a study done by VT , but there they found that Doberman puppies baby teeth on leaning inward, they believe that the tongues straiten there teeth so the pinchers are a-lined , if not then they would not be able to , well pinch.

It also helps them breath after birth , but holding there mouths open to improve air into there lungs .

This one got me , it teaches them to how to control there body heat , this is how they learn to pant to keep them self’s cool . Amazing

- I have NO idea , just chitin you Mel >:)>:)>:)>:)

Almost forgot the lmao

STJ--YES!!!! I knew you needed a red bitch...

<VBG> dobebug--and yes, to stay on topic--late spring, early summer is peak puppy season--built into the genetic code of canines--"have puppies in the spring so you can find enough food for yourself and them before winter comes..."
