puppy has same grandmother

Hello, I came across a breeder who currently have litters available and I asked for the pedigrees. It appears the parents (sire and dam) have the same mother. Will this cause any health concerns down the road? What are you guy's opinion?

Thank you!

You have to go back further. Did you see a printed 3 or 4 generation pedigree? Do you know the health of the dogs in the pedigree?
Did they say why they did such a tight linebreeding? For me personally, that's too close.

It might--but I'd need to see more of the pedigree than just parents and grandparents.

And it might not--you should also know about the general health of all of the dogs in the immediate pedigree of the puppies--I'd definitely want to see at least a four generation pedigree.

I have not asked the breeder. But will ask later.
I don't know if it's ok to post the Dobequest links for the sire and dam here or is better to DM you guys?

IMO, Rogelio & Moises (Del Rey) do a good job in their breeding program. I know they have youngsters out there now, I don't remember the parents having the same dam. My memory isn't what it used to be, either, to be fair.

I just looked at Del Rey--(and it's OK to post registered names of the dogs--people do it all the time--it's basically a publc record). Didn't go through all of the dogs listed there to see which of their bitches might have been bred twice but to different sires.

Kind of looked in a fast check like they were doing a loose linebreeding to dogs who had some very nice South American breeding behind them.

Just got off the phone with breeder. He was very professional and knowledgeable, he said the reason he did that is to keep good traits.

Interesting.

Both the sire's AND the dam's sires are Foxfire dogs.

Also..The sire's grandfather is Rock. Rock is Popeye's (my son's dog's) sire and a wonderful dog. And, the dam's grandfather is Jet. Jet was our Sheriff's, sire. Also a terrific Doberman.

I'm curious as to what dobebug has to say.

To piggyback on Johns comment, Rock is also the sire of my Kona and she is amazing.

what a small world!!
Yes, it's a very small world when you get to talking about breeding and how to read pedigrees and what the purpose of some breedings are.

So as John^^^ pointed out both sides of the pedigree are Foxfire--and the dam's side which has Jet (Ch Foxfire's All Star) is a pretty good example of the kind of breeding that Foxfire does--to retain good qualities but to not maintain things you don't want. But the sires side has very nice Canadian breeding from different lines and a South American line that like one Michelle used when she outcrossed to a South American line goes back to Lex Luther.

I had to laugh--check the pedigrees--on the dam's side you find Ch Foxfire's Love Monster (Cupid) and on the sire's side (the Rock side) you'll see Ch Foxfire's Gold Toed Monster (Toad) these two dogs are pedigree litter brothers--same sire and the dam's for Cupid and Toad are litter mates.

Because of the breeding that has the same grandmother for both sides--most people would regard it as a very line bred pedigree.

And Toad was my dog--I waited many years for that dog--I wanted a show quality fawn male. I've had several of Michelle dogs--and they were universally great dogs but I think if I had to name a favorite it would be Toad--maybe because I waited so long for him or because I had him so long--he lived to be 14.

Thank you all for the inputs and opinion, and spending time to answer my question. it's very amazing that how everyone is somehow "related " to each other in the Doberman world!

Relatively speaking the American Doberman is still a very young breed--the first Doberman to arrive here was back in the 1920's and as I recall, and I think the AKC had a standard and recognized them as breed toward the end of the 1920's (but I'm too lazy to go look it up).

It's the conformation breeders that actually use pedigrees and manipulate breedings to bring out the best of in the dogs they are breeding. So if you find pedigrees interesting (I do and I don't even breed dogs of any kind) but I do watch what the good breeders do and how they do it and that's where my own dogs come from--good breeders and they have pretty good pedigrees and do well in both conformation and performance and are nice to live with.

You can't ask questions about a pedigree or a breeders with out discovering just how small the world of Doberman Pinschers really is.

It's hard to believe anyone who has read your posts on DT for any time doesn't know Toad is your favorite.:) I think it was at least a year before I saw so much as the name of any of the others, even your current guy was just "the loaner dog" for a long time.
