Puppy Class Fears

1163 Views 8 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Sooz
I'm really hoping Lucan will enjoy his class tomorrow. Last week he was so overwhelmed by the GSD puppy that he hid behind the bench during playtime!
We were told that this week he may have to socialize with the Pug and Shi Tzu puppies- how humiliating for him! I'm taking my camera tomorrow, so I'll post some pics.
He aced the sit and down commands and seems to LOVE the training part. He aims to please (especially if a treat is involved). He seems to be very intelligent-brag, brag, brag.....:) I think his encounter a few weeks ago with his big, bad chocolate lab cousin has left a lasting impression on him though. When the other dogs sniff him, he cries like it's hurting him! He is slowly getting better and we take him out as much as we can to meet new people and other dogs.
We love our Doberboy so much!:boldblue:

That's what FiFi did too. Hiding the whole time. The trainer then divided up the room, and FiFi "the big bad Dobe" was with the little dogs, and even then she was shy. You should see the faces of the small dog owners when the trainer would put FiFi in with them - pure fear, they thought for sure their dogs would end up as a snack. Eventually the moved up to the bigger dogs, but not until the end of the sessions. However she still prefers to play with smallish dogs, but she's only 9 mos old, so I'm still hoping and working with her. Keep socializing!

hehe! awww too sweet! :) I cant wait for pictures!!!!
When we were in puppy class, I saw the same thing with other puppies. But by midway through the 8 week class, they didn't have any reservations anymore. We had the other end of that spectrum. My girl was the party girl and freaked out the shy ones. She ended up in a group by herself until the instructor brought in her adult demo dog, until the other puppies got past the shyness. I guess I do have a "natural born diva".

Petey did the same thing....he was HUGE next to all the puppies in his class, and he would run screaching from even the powder puffs! Now he plays with every size dog. It took a good month of constant exposure to a ton of different dogs, now he has no fear of any dogs at six months old. He loves meeting up with other dogs to play. Even when a dog goes at him aggressively, he isn't afraid. I guess it helps that he is over 70 pounds already!!!

Velma was the only one in her puppy class that had to stay on leash because she just flattened all the other puppies........ knock over and lay on flatten - LOL!

Louise never went to class till she was much older - but she started going to shows when she was a young puppy. Louise thinks she is the queen of all she surveys - it gets her into trouble sometimes.
Just keep taking him to class and it will be no time and he will be romping with all the other dogs. Our Titus was shy when he was a pup and that is no longer the case.

Our little one Tess and one of the Yorkies starts class in two weeks.

It took Tess a couple days to be totally comfortable around our little dogs. It took a week before she would play with the big dogs and not yelp when they were running around. Just when I thought she was becoming a brave little girl, she discovered the goat out back. She yelped all the way back to my wife. lol
Yes, what tjmom said is exactly right...and in no time that GSD puppy will have met his match. They'll probably be best buds. Oh yeah, and look out chocolate lab...your time is coming, too! Lucan's acting perfectly normal and as his size increases so will his confidence, little by little.
