I've got a new red boy coming in mid-May- I'm excited it's been 5 years since my last doberman who was a rescue. Ace was 2.5 when I got him and already housetrained, so it's been a long while since I've done potty training with a puppy! I'm prepared to take him out several times during the night and when I'm home take him out routinely- but my question is how long can he really hold it when I'm gone? I work fairly close to home and plan on making runs home- I also have some willing volunteers who can let take him out for potty and play time during the day. Just wondering what kind of schedule I should try to plan for. He'll be about 10wks when he comes home. Thanks for any advice- and thanks for the forum- a great resource!

House breaking 101 :
If you take them out on about a 6 ft leash it helps keep them focused tell them go potty ,hurry up or what ever words you want to use just use the same words each time. Stand in one spot let them go all around you till they find the spot then Praise like it is the greatest thing you ever saw. If they do not go in about 20 minutes go back in and crate them or tie them to you them go back out in about 30 minutes.pups need to go out after naps, playing, eating & drinking 1st thing in the morning last thing at night depending on the age of the pup you may need to take them out at night too. Always use a pet urine enzyme to clean up all traces of urine or feces you can use a black light to find all traces. It takes about 3-6 months of contestant training to house break a pup the more accidents they have the longer it takes. Hang a bell on the door you go out you ring it until the pup gets the idea how to ring it yes sometimes they ring it to go look at a squirrel but its a phase they go though you just have to go though it with them. Do not forget to praise each time they go to reinforce the potty training. If you are consistent you will also have a pup/dog that will go potty on command comes in handy when it rains, snow, is icy, on a trip at night . People will think you are a amazing trainer too. Good Luck with your new baby.

For the first puppy month:
1977 pup needed out every 1.5 hours max, when I was home.
2000 pup needed out every .75 hours max, when I was home.
At bed time:
One outside trip (most times) for potty break at 3:30 am..this worked out fine.
My pups have never peed in my bed...but I am up like a flash, if they whine.
- current pup got excited first thing in the morning, when placed on the floor...so for one week, she was carried outside

On work days (Mon-Fri), new pup was crated for 4 hours max...this worked out fine.

Each 8 week old dobe puppy, was 100% potty trained in 3 weeks time...with only few accidents.
- outside visits all controlled off-leash, as I incorporate this exciting voice training...as much as possible, from day1

P.S. - back yard for potty only, then to the front yard for a quick play or in the house for treat
- my dogs learned and liked to pee in longer grass / so when puppy training...I don't cut one spot of the back yard as short..to mark the learning spot
(then there is no confusion of my expectations, when we arrive at the same repeated spot...over & over, every time)
