Parvo

It seems that Parvo is starting to make the rounds at some dog shows. I just heard that some Canadian dogs came back from some shows in the States and have come down with Parvo. Evidently one Pro Handler will not be going to the states for Westminister because one of his/her dogs is sick. So, if you are going to the Garden make sure that everyone is up to date on inoculations, and that precautions are taken. Also this is second hand info, but I know a lot of people will be going, and felt that a heads up should be given. Also remember that if you are going as a spectator, parvo is carried on the soles of your shoes so leave them outside or disinfect them with a mild bleach solution before bringing them in the house.

I didnt think older dogs were affected as seriously and that parvo was essentially a puppy disease? I heard rumors that parvo was contracted at the MI Winter Classic, but nothing was confirmed. Bella and I attended the last day and she had a small bout of diarrhea, but the vet checked her over, and said it was simply a stomach issue, nothing more serious than that.

The vaccine given may not cover the strain of parvo that is present. I understand here in Ontario, that a fully vaccinated 10 month old pup died recently, and so did two unvaccinated pups. It's like our flu shot, you get it, and hope it covers everything but knowing that new strains may not be covered and you may not be protected.

Our puppy had 4 parvo shots and it has been effective by doing that. You have to do it at the right time and even then there are risks with any vaccine. Better than not giving the vaccine to me. The older dogs can get titers but I sure wouldn't do that on a puppy with Parvo not given. Rabies can be every 3 years.

Parvo is such a nasty virus. I believe it can be carried on clothes and such, so any time you are around potentially infected dogs/pups it is important to take all precautions not to pass it to other puppies or dogs with compromised immune systems that you might be in contact with.

Also, I don't think bleach is 100% effective in killing Parvo. The virus is very resistant and can live a long time, even outside. Definitely vaccinate, but be careful! Parvo=Suck.

I was talking with a breeder/trainer today about a puppy I maybe getting form a different breeder who said I should go to them for training. They ask me if my breeder uses something called cerona (something like that) with the parvo shot. It is one shot but guessing it is a different strain of parvo. Maybe someone with more info can jump in with that.

They likely said "corona" vaccine, which protects against the corona virus, not parvo (that's what the parvo vaccine is for). Corona is a highly contagious intestinal disease, but not as severe of an infection as parvo. Corona vaccine is a non core vaccine, so you would be best to discuss with your vet if it's necessary to give.
