Was at the vets office today and they gave me the quote for Copper's spay. For the people that are new..Copper is Vwd affected and had a problem with clot time the first time we tried to do it.
Here is the breakdown:
spay $150
bloodwork $53
Iv cath $29
Iv fluids $31
ddavp $150
frozen plasma $175
typing cards $57
transfusion $150

When I saw this I did not know if I should laugh or cry. Please do not get me wrong on this....I will pay whatever is necessary. With me having no vet background at all..is the above necessary? Should I call other places and check on prices? I had thoughts on calling the U of MN vet dept and seeing what they had to say? Any advice or direction would be much appreciated.

OUCH that is steep even for this country,I paid about £190(approx $380) for Chelsie but she is not Vwd affected, but i would question a £400 vet bill for a spay or neuter.

I paid $274.00 for a spay no vwd affected that included staying overnight including tax. Mind you my son paid 569.00 in another town for his cat, no problems go figure depends, on the crook and whether they own the building or rent it. etc.
Wow your bill would be $795.00 plus, maybe that is the going rate for vwd affected, I know it is alot but at least your vet is prepared for an emergency blood transfusion, and seems to have it all in place that should be somewhat consoling that your not dealing with a I don't know idiot.

Wegs813,
I posted a thread about this a while back as I was in shock and questioning the quote I got for Bumpy to be neutered - also vWD affected with a few other issues. My quote was $900-$1,400 without him having been seen yet by this specialty vet. My regular vet who is highly respected preferred that I take him to this specialty place where they were 100% prepared in the event that there is a problem in the midst of surgery. A couple of people responded and I felt more comfortable with knowing that I had to take these precautions rather than take a chance. I am sure that people with experience with this issue will respond and make you feel more at ease with these precautions. I, personally, am opting to take all of the same precautions because I could never forgive myself if I didn't and something happened to him.

Isn't this a worse case scenario quote? You may want to check with your vet. If everything goes according to normal, I get a cost of $263.00. Surely they aren't going to charge you for the following if they're not needed:

ddavp $150
frozen plasma $175
typing cards $57
transfusion $150

It's worth asking. Please post what you find out.

I too would ask if the last 4 items are all GOING to be charged or ONLY charged if needed. Personally, I don't think that it is totally out of line if she is truly VWD affected AND if she has clotting issues. I know that there was a thread on this not too long ago, but I don't remember if they did a dna test to determine her vwd or just the clotting one....... my memory anymore is the pits.

geez! It has been about 10 years since I had to have a cat spayed.....everyone I've rescued has been altered. :O)

I would've thought the IV cath/fluids would be included with the spay cost. But you are talking a lot more preparation for as safe a procedure as possible since she is a large canine and Vwd.

I had to pay individually for every thing with my 2 cats surgeries last week. But since the both weigh under 15lbs each...who knows. I'm just glad my income tax return was a good one this year. YAY! how quickly it has been spent on the boys.

I thought about that too and decided to err on the high side with my dollar amount. Figure, maybe they would start an extra IV (Central line? Is that done?) in the event there is a bleeding episode. Any which way, I wouldn't mind paying to have an extra line in just in case it's needed and wouldn't mind paying stocking fees to have special meds on hand. I would have a problem footing the whole bill for something I didn't use and that could be used on another patient (and billed again) or returned to a manufacture for credit.

Yikes! Java's spay surgery, pain meds, plus a few extra days of boarding came to around $425. Vets bring their dogs in on surgery day in case transfusions are needed. I think the above advice to ask if this is the 'worst case' quote is not unreasonable.

I think a lot depends on if they usually store some of the material. If they have to bring in the frozen plasma, for example, it's not unusual for you to have to pay for it whether it's used or not.

I could be mistaken, but I think the DDAVP is given *prior* to the surgery, as a precautionary measure. So it would be used whether the dog had a subsequent clotting problem during surgery or not . It doesn't work for every dog, but is well worth trying.

Yes, I did some research and you are right. If DDAVP is going to be used it is given prior to surgery, but it appears it would be better to give cryoprecipitate (I don’t know the cost). If cryoprecipitate isn't available, fresh frozen plasma seems to be the next best choice. JMO at this moment.

The bottom line is the procedure is going to cost mucho extra if all the appropriate precautions are in place.

That is the information that I found in my research as well as I am dealing with the same issues with my boy. Two packages (not sure if packages is the right wording) of cryoprecipitate plus all the other costs.....only in Los Angeles that somehow totals close to $1400 (that is the high end).
