Ontario crop/dock vet?

3258 Views 17 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  waiting
Hey guys! :) I haven't been much on here, work and life have been keeping me pretty busy.

The good news is, I'm waiting on a puppy :D So SO excited!! I can't wait, the pups will be born towards the end of September.

The pup will be comming in from Europe, so it will be all natural. I'm considering if I should get the pup croped/docked when it arrives. I have always pictured having a traditional looking dobie, but on the other hand I don't really want to deal with the pain of the after care involved. Having a pup with a tail and ears would be pretty cool, the first doberman I ever met in person was all natural. On the other hand, I want this dog to be a visual deterant as well and we all know what the general population's concept of a doberman is.

I want to have the crop/dock option researched in case when the puppy arrives I decide to go ahead with it. I would really appreciate vet recomendations from those of you experienced in this matter. If it helps, I woudln't be interested in a show cut, but a medium cut (don't want too short). I think the decision will ultimately come down to cost of the procedure, the amount of time for the pup to heel fully, amount of time needed to post the ears, and my ability to cope with the feelings of guilt for putting the pup throught all that :p

Hi,
I can't help with your question, sorry.
I just thought I'd say that I decided to leave my boy with natural ears, I love him to death and love those goofy ears but I now wish I had had him cropped.
When you see some of the pictures of the beautiful Dobes on here with those nice pointy dobe ears it really makes me regret my choice, especially when people think Cedric is a hound dog cross. My next Dobe, after Cedric is gone, will have cropped ears (unless it's banned by then :)
So if you think you want those pointy ears you better do it while you can!
(But if you decide to leave the ears you'll love how soft and velvety they are :)
Zucker

Where are you located in Ontario?? Maybe Pm MaryandDobes and she could set you in the right direction.
Abby's ears were cropped in London by Dr. Staples. His style is really nice and we were given some free after-care from his vet techs. The ears were cropped when she was still with the breeder but we went in for a couple tapings which they helped us with no problem.
Dobie Lover, I'm in Toronto but I'm willing to drive a reasonable distance to get this done. If I do decide on this, I want it done right.
Chase was also done in London, I am not sure bye who though??.

Pm. Mary and see we what she say's. Good luck
I have an American Dobe friend who has three Dobe imports that came to her all natural with dew claws, ears, and a tail. As soon as they arrived she cropped/docked/ and got rid of dew claws without any issues. They healed fast and weren't bothered by it. All three have a medium/pet crop.
Who is the breeder?
PM sent to Mary :)

DnD, the breeder is Ascomannis. I haven't even thought of dew claws... good point.

Any one know how long on average it would take for the medium crop to be up and standing?
I would guess it all depends on how heavy the dog's ear leather was.?? With a medium crop though I would say 4 months.

On a side note.. Zucker I was just thinking of this.. What were your plans with your dog?? I am just thinking that bye the time you bring your pup over here then go get him cropped. You could of got a pup here for much cheaper with the ears already done.

Don't remind me :p
My choice is based on the fact I want to do schutzhund with this pup and there are also certain character traits I was looking for. I did look at some breeders around here and in US, but ultimately found exactly what I'm looking for way over there, across the giant pond! :p
Sorry

The only reason I asked was because I was looking at the Ontario rescue page yesterday, and noticed 2 dogs from Doberich that are there. They are euro and still very young. They look very nice :)

Good luck

I maintain the page, Mary Jo.

I'm very disturbed that I had to put Dazzle on there today. It was one of Dazzle's litters that provided the playdates / puppy socialization for my singleton, Deacon.
I dont know of any ear people there, but Congrats on choosing a breeder and getting a puppy! I know you have been looking for a long time now!
Zucker congratulations on the new arrival. I would have been surprised actually if you said you were not getting your dobe from Europe. I myself like the look of a Euro dobe. Have you decided on the sex yet? I can see you with a male cropped and docked! Sorry to the natural ear people if I offend you but, I have to say cropped ears sets them off to a wow, especially if they have a good head and beautiful stop.
If you get Staples to do it be in with him, he sometimes leaves them a little to long for my liking (show cut ) and that he is not rushing. Yes he is good but he has been known to cut uneven as well. Not just hearsay I have seen it with other dogs that have gone there, not just dobes. Great Dane's and a couple of boxer pups. His prices are reasonable, but that is not everything is it.

Thanks Waiting :) You got me right, black male cropped and docked is what my dreams are made of!

An unfortunate update :( Got an email from the breeder few days ago, there will be no pups. The pregnancy terminated. :sadcry:
I waited this long I can wait longer, but to put it bluntly this sure sucks.
Awe Zucker what happened? Is the bitch ok?
Yeah it does suck Zucker! Sorry to hear the news, for you and the bitch. Hope she pulled through. If you like the breeder see what plans he has coming up. I went on the site it looks like they have the type of dobe you want, your going to have to have a little more patience and wait to get your Handsome black male. One could look at the positive side better she lost them now with having problems then a litter to have been born sickly. Cheer up you will get the one that was mean't to be.
