This is Mako at 15 weeks... crop looks too wide at the top and not shapely, maybe too much bell as well.

IDK, maybe I'm being too picky but he didn't crop it close to the picture I showed him.

I still love my boy, but next time I will go to an ear crop specialist and not a vet...

BTW, thanks to DB, I'm now posting his ears myself. I got tired of the drive and the vet putting him to sleep everytime he posted them. Not only that, the tape he used was way too sticky and would rip all his fur off and even his skin sometimes irritating his ears and would cause an infection.

I followed the sticky and it's working out so far. You can see he's got a pocket on his right ear and leans slightly inward and his left is weak comparing to his right. I guess I'll be posting for a while longer...:(

Wow I am certainly no expert on cropping in fact I am only a 2 week old member of the forum--my dob is a mix I found--BUT never heard of putting a dog to sleep to post ears==did you see the instruction Sticky posted?? Good luck and I did see the pix--I like the ears and if it is a pup his final look is still down the road--they grow and change as they get older=I like the third pic the best==

I should've said "sedated" instead of sleep. But yes, they give him something to sedate him and when they're done, something else to bring him back. He's always been fine later on but a little groggy when I pick him up...

I think I saw a thread where a lady corrected some ears...like you still have time to make a change if you want

Nah...I'm not going to put him through that again and they're not that awful that I should even consider it.

I'm just a little pissed that it's not even close to the picture I provided of what I wanted them to look like...

He's a cute pup, good luck with the posting :)

But
I agree next time find a breeder who will take care of the crop for you, AKA a reputable breeder...

Also there should be no reason your boy has to be sedated to post his ears.

I presume you are on this forum to learn and therefore will be buying from a reputable breeder who will look after all of this for you - so no need to worry. :)

I live near good breeders and good ear croppers and yes of course the breeder is doing that but I still have to decide on the look

Your boy is a cutie :)

I agree with the others, sedation is not necessary for posting...kinda frightening that the vet does that to the poor pups. Also, I wouldn't rely so much on photos for the kind of crop you like. The crop has to fit with the shape of the head and how well the pup will grow into them. Surely, you could specify on length however a reputable vet that crops knows what will fit best for your dobe.

Good luck with posting!! Practice and patience!!:D

most breeders dont give you more than the choice of show or medium if that, and good croppers will generally give pet dobes a crop in a length and shape that fits that dogs head in a usually medium to long but not necessarily show height crop.

Hmm, not so much. A good breeder will want to make sure their pups end up with the type of crop they want, or at least agree to.

Oh my, he got big FAST! what a ham :) Just keep posting, I'm sure he will be stunning when he is grown. I would write a review for the cropping vet though, so that you can let future owners know. He just sounds new/unexperience to me, as a lot of new or unexperienced vets feel most comfortable with patient under sedation for most procedures, even the minor ones.

sounds weird...I mean didn't mother nature custom fit the ears to the head??
as in...pups are not full grown -their ears are bigger than usual so how can they fit the ears to the head when the animal is not yet grown....confusing...

I am reall apalled a vet would sedate a puppy to tape ears. I'm not the best taper and have to do them more often as a result, however, I can tape a puppy by myself IF I have to. That's ridiculous and sad!

I think he's a very handsome boy. He still has some growing and filling out to do, and the way his ears fit his head will change, too. I can see what you're saying with the shape, but really, over time, you'll get used to it, and that will just be him. There are plenty of members on here who aren't super wild about their dogs' crops. But they love them nonetheless. Keep up with the posting, and do the absolute best you can with what you've got, and I think they'll look fine as he matures. He's a handsome dude, either way, and he's yours!

especially considering the vet has staff to help hold him if needed...
but it happens -I can now only take Sparky to my closer vet for nail trimmings cause the other place said they would have to sedate him
sometimes they thing aggressive dog breeds will bite...ridiculous...

I'm not trying to justify what the vet did but if I can remember correctly, dreamsongs was concerned that the puppy was in a whole lot of pain, and his ears got pretty infected. (should have not been posted at all until healed but thats beside the point)

EDIT: I know if my baby was in so much pain that it was bothering me, I would not have a problem with sedation. I dont think it had to do with no one being able to hold him still, I think he was truely hurting. But I also think this whole situation was somewhat uncalled for-- posted ears before healed and a vet that wasnt really a crop specialist....

LOL....yes, he's growing so darn fast and he's just a little devil. 100 mph all day long and then he's out and then the cycle starts up again...

I'm not sure what it is about the shape but they may be too wide towards the top and not tapered enough. I think that's why I don't love them that much right now...
