Hi, all!
I am new to DobermanTalk and new to Dobermans. I’ve had Boxers for 22 years and got two of my dogs through CGC and one of them into pet therapy last decade. On August 9, I lost my boy, Roman, to degenerative myelopathy and on August 29, I lost my mother to cancer. Needless to say, Summer 2020 hasn’t been great...but, on to happier things - I have been planning for a Doberman since April and have ‘gone down the DT rabbit hole’ of information on health, temperament, training, etc. I am looking at a few breeders whom I have found recommended here and have filled out puppy applications so we shall see how timing shakes out. I missing my boy and just having a big dog next to me 24/7 but know that the right dog will come my way at the right time. In the meantime, I am caring for my mother’s dogs and helping my father become a ‘dog person’ :2smile:

I don’t have a question (for now) but I did want to thank all of you who contribute your true expertise on this forum. It takes time to write thoughtful responses to questions both well-thought out and not-so-thought-out and I appreciate that effort to help educate we newbie. I look forward to learning more and, hopefully, sharing stories of my future Doberman.

Here are the girls (my mother’s) that are filling the dog void for me at the moment: https://www.instagram.com/p/CFumIUmhvAY/

Regards,
MM

Thank you! Yes, I loved posting my boy on IG. When I am fortunate to have my pup, I will likely start a new page for him.

Incidentally, I have contacted some of the breeders recommended here and am hoping to hear back soon regarding application status, reference checks, etc. so a huge THANK YOU to all of you who have responded to recent posts re: reputable breeders. I got the info and didn’t even have to ask:2smile:

In the meantime, I am absorbing all I can and, happily, while there are distinct differences between Dobermans and Boxers, it seems that my 22 years of high-maintenance (health- and energy-wise) Boxer experience sets me up pretty well for a Dobe. Off to read today’s posts!

Yup, boxers are high-energy dogs with a definite sense of humor—dobes need a lot of exercise and attention just like boxers, and their sense of humor isn't half bad either. You'll find that mental exercise is as important as physical exercise for dobes—they NEED to use their brains to be happy.

Thank you! Yes, doggie brain games are something I love to create. With my boys, I always found new and interesting things for them to explore or solve. An old favorite of Roman’s was the Amazon box loosely taped after being emptied and refilled with a few hard treats, a few chewy treats, some old towel pieces and a few squeaky toys. He loved to slide it across the floors for about 10 minutes then rip it open and scatter his bounty around the room. He loved that!

Years ago, my dog trainer told me that 15 mins of brain games amounts to 1 hr of physical exercise. Not sure of the accuracy of ratio but mental exercise sure works wonders on dogs.

Here is a few old vids of my boy (and thanks for indulging me!):

Thank you!
They are such a wonderful link to her that I couldn’t imagine NOT helping and I know I’ll get my father squared away with proper dog care (cuddles, kisses, letting them share the sofa, and so on. :grin2:)
