Hi everyone... My husband and I have begun the long process of finding our fur baby. We have fallen in love with the breed and their personality. We are willing to wait and invest all the time and money needed to find our "perfect" pup. We want a puppy who is loving, loyal and healthy. We are interested in a dog who will be our best friend as well as a guard dog. We are dedicated to provide him with the best home we can! I guess my question is... Who are the reputable breeders? We are so scared of encountering BYBs so I decided to post it on here. Distance is not a limit for us. We would like to keep the breeder recommendation within the States. We have thought about rescue however right now we would just like to have some reputable breeder recommendations. Thank you so so much in advance for all your help!:2smile::2smile::2smile:

Excited for you! We just got our first Doberman and love him! Ours is from a breeder in texas and we went to his home, met his adult dogs, the puppies and really liked his whole set up. The breeder is good at getting back to me the same day when I have a question, but DT is faster and there are people on here who have owned Dobermans for over 40 years. You can search anything in the google search bar on the right and more than likely, the topic has been discussed on this site. IT IS SO HELPFUL. Ours did not come with his ears cropped so that has been a bit challenging...I would say if you go that route make sure you have a good vet to crop his ears that is nearby where you live. Ask on this site, they will tell you the best vets to go to in your area. Also, I learned that health certificate is not the same as health testing so make sure you ask plenty of questions. Just a couple things I learned along the way :) . I paid for the testing myself (after we brought puppy home) and used vetgen and so far, all is well..we are still waiting for 1 more test result. Good luck and congratulations on your upcoming pup. I know once you get him you will wonder why you never got one before....That is exactly how we feel. We are going to get another one in 1-2 years. :grin2:

To DobieParents1215--Welcome to DT from Colorado!!

Here’s some threads for you to look at:

http://www.dobermantalk.com/breeding-breeders/14184-recommended-breeders.html
This is an old thread--some of these breeders may not be breeding anymore; some may have changed their breeding practices and have become not so good breeders (or vice versa); some people who posted on this list have better insights than others about what being a good breeder entails. So don’t simply accept a recommendation on its face because it is on this thread. Pay a lot of attention to the warning in the first post: The following posts are highly opinion based and may not be reflect personal experience or interaction with breeders. Please be sure to conduct your own research prior to selecting a breeder to ensure you make the best decision.

Buying A Doberman Pinscher - DPCA Breeder/Exhibitor Education
A very thorough page well worth the read.

And for when you finally get your puppy (though you may want to do a little reading ahead :))
Resources for New Puppy Owners | Some Thoughts About Dogs

And a quick comment for AllisonJ:) You might want to wait until your pup is closer to 3 before getting another dog (opposite sex from the first, of course). Make sure your big guy is WELL-trained. Pups can learn a lot about good behavior from their older sibling; unfortunately they can also learn a lot about bad behavior too. LOL

I apologize I meant Foxfire*
Our last 3 boys have been Foxfire dogs. Honestly, McCoy, our youngest is the most "perfect" dog we have ever owned. Health. temperament, trainability. He is almost 2 1/2. If you can develop a relationship with Michelle Santana, I would jump on a Foxfire pup.

Best of luck in your search for a puppy...

I know, I know.. I can't help it, my own puppy is giving me puppy fever! Is that even possible ?! LOL Regarding training, I have high hopes for Moosedog. I watch videos all of the time of his grandfather Maxim Di Altobello and smile. Moose's face reminds me of him. Our new trainer is coming here tomorrow afternoon for our first session. Super excited! We have taught him sit, shake, down and fetch on our own but Unfortunately, we are lacking in the most basic command "Come!" He will act like he doesn't hear us sometimes and at first we thought maybe the posts were interfering with his hearing then i opened the ziplock I keep his food in from 2 rooms away and he ran right over! Selective hearing I guess:wink2:

Thank you everyone! I really do appreciate it! I will continue to search on the websites mentioned above, however if you have a reputable breeder you know of please do not hesitate to share! We are willing to travel :)

Where are you located? That may help us a bit.
Sunset breeds very infrequently. If you're in the PNW, I would recommend Foxfire, Icon, Ravensown, and Starlaine.
