With that in mind 06gs, it would benifit you greatly to do some major research in the breed before hand, although clearly you are here, so that is a start :)

Dobermans can be high energy dogs, they are velcroed to their owners nearly all the time. As a first dog, I am very iffy that a doberman is an ideal choice. They are not an easy dog to own. Dobies require work and time everyday. They are not your basic "porch dog", they are active, and if not properly trained and socialized (hey didn't I just get through saying all this, daja vu!) they can be a liability to own. If you have a busy schedule, they are probably not the breed for you. In addition, they are sadly blacklisted by many insurance companies, so there can be troubles there just with your home insurance, goodness knows I can relate to that.

They are also prone to some serious health issues, and that is worth checking out in itself. http://www.dpca.org/gendisease.html

I'm not saying all this to down Dobermans, it's just fair to say they aren't for everybody, or even most people. And with the commitment involved, it's worth it to know what you are getting into, especially even considering one as a first dog.

May I ask what attracted you to picking a doberman as a breed of choice?

Hi and Welcome!! :)

I'm a first time Doberman owner and I couldn't have picked a better breed IMO. Bruno is also my first dog (other then growing up). But like Lexus said they take alot of time and dedication. I'm a stay at home mom so Bruno is ALWAYS with someone. Rarely, if at all left at home. He's always in the van no matter where we go :) He thinks he's a 54lb lap dog haha.

Good Luck with the search :)

Ha! How did I know you were going to react like this???

I know that back in the late 80's/early 90's Kadena built several high rise apartment buildings for junior rank housing - unforunately pets aren't allowed in the apartments. I wonder if that is the kind of housing 06gs is in....

Hi and welcome to the forum from myself and the ---->>>>>>>

I am totally with Lexus on this, please study the breed closely before deciding and be prepared to "put in the time if you're gonna commit the crime" and if you do then you will be rewarded with THE best dog in the world. It is totally imperative to take these dogs to a training class, because of their reputation they have to be better behaved than your average Labrador,Poodle, etc.
It's not really a crime to own a dobe, it's hard work but so rewarding and above all itsFUN ,FUN ,FUN!!!

I have the two following books:

How To Train Your Doberman Pinscher
by Liz Palika

The Doberman Pinscher (Brains and Beauty)
by Rod Humphries and Joanna Walker

I have learned a lot and continue to learn from these books and ofcourse this forum is the BEST place to come and ask questions.

Good Luck

Definetely "Don't Shoot the dog" , "The Other End of the Leash" , and (my favorite) "Culture Clash".

They aren't doberman books, but they are excellant sources of information and training techniques.

I think the best kind of training resource to find is to find a good training school or club. Books are great in learning how to train your dog, but a good Obedience class will teach you how to train your dog. About 70% of these classes is about the owners and how we contribute to a dogs behavior. Once we, as owners, learn what to do and what not to do, we can better train our dogs.

I recommend actual training classes and supplement these with training books. We, as owners, contribute to our dogs behavior without even realizing it.
