Hi we are new to owning a doberman and live in Bend Oregon. Finely is her name and she is a rescue from Prosser Washington. WE have had her for 1 week and she is approx 6 months old and learning very fast.

We have only noticed one thing that seems troublesome: Finley is afraid of any dog that is larger than her. She will bark and attempt to nip the other dog. If the other dog just stops and looks at her she runs back to me screaching as if she is being attacked. We understand that we have a lot of socialization to do still but I am curious if anyone else has had this happen?

Thanks and I so happy that i found a forum to ask questions.

Welcome from Michigan!

I am new to this Dobe thing also, as Koa is my first, but I might suggest enrolling in an obedience class with her? Might help her to be confident around other dogs and have positive experiences around/near them.

Many, many, many more experienced people here than me - I'm sure you'll get some great advice.

Welcome from Texas! It sounds like your issue can be fixed with socialization. I wouldn't stick her in a yard/park/whatever with one (or many) large dogs but I'd consider taking her places where she can be near bigger dogs but she can't get to them and they can't get to her. Perhaps a dog friendly park, for example.

Welcome to the forum! I'd second the obedience classes, they're great for socialisation in a safe environment and for building a great bond between you. Would love to see pis! :)

Welcome from Sweden. Oregon is cool, I have been there before and drove ATV in the dunes. Maybe your dog can run there. Enjoy!

Thanks for the advice! We are going to be enrolling in classes very soon which seems to be a great idea and suggestion form alot of people we have talked to. We are lucky that we have several friends with dogs that are bigger than her and we have been introducing them one at a time to Finley. I have to say since I wrote this that Finley has made leaps and bounds from where she was.

She has made a friend with a Veshla that is about 1 year old and they are playing and running together in a fenced in area at a local school. They actually where playing tug of war with their tales wagging for about 5 minutes. There was no aggression growling or barking it was so inspirational for us knowing that she can be friendly and sweet with bigger dogs.

I will try and get pictures posted soon. I need to upgrade my account first:D

Thanks so much!

Finley and Fam

Welcome from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho...I love the Bend area, and thanks for rescuing! I agree with the obedience classes - definitely a great way to socialize Finley! It sounds like she's coming along very well already!! :)
