As you know Lady has been diagnosed with "red mange" and I'm fighting a battle. On top of the mange Lady's body decided to suprise me even more by going into heat last week! Now I've got a big decision to make. Lady was sceduled for a spay on the 29th, due to the fact that everything I have reserched said that going into heat is far more stressfull on the body than the spay procedure. Of course now I have to ride out the heat and hope like he!! that it doesn't cause the mange to flare up more. So far luck has been on my side. The thing is now that she's already cycled...well not finished yet, but would it be better if I chose to wait untill the mange is under control to have her spayed, or should I go ahead and keep her appointment and just get it over with?

My breeder asked that I have Java spayed before her 2nd heat cycle. A call to the vet would be your best bet to see if the spaying should be postponed for a week or two, plus they should be able to advise you over the ph about the effect of the hormone surge on mange. Better to check w/ them now than to bring her in, be sent home for a week and then charged a fee for the missed appointment. Poor pup I hope she isn't too uncomfortable.

IMO I would not have her spayed so soon after her heat, she should not have another for at least 6 to 8 months, have a go at clearing up her mange for a few months, then re-schedule her for spaying. And if your vet is only interested in $$$ then get a new vet.

I would wait also. You might as well get the mange cleared up first before getting any procedures done.

This vet is our only option...unless I wanted to drive 2hrs for every appointment. It's not really the $$....I't's just that they aren't really "personable", it's more like get em in and get em out. They spent no time really discussing the issues with me, or options for treatment. It was we're going to do this and hope for the best. Which was pretty much the same attitude I got about spaying her...it's my decision, I don't want to make a choice that could affect her, I want to know from the "professional" what they think is best, but I'm not getting that. I guess I'll hold off on the spay, she's not bleeding as much now so the hard part of her heat should be over soon lol. She has no clue that I just mopped and would like to keep the floors clean for at least 24hrs....so to Lady a pair of panties is tourchure lol.

It is much better to wait till she is about 1/2 way between seasons before spaying her - this will hopefully decrease your chances of having spay incontinence, and is just easier on her to not be anywhere near a hormonal change.

Even if your vet is willing to spay while she's in season (and she's still in season--the bleeding is just the first part--she's got another two and with some bitches 3 weeks more of being in season and she's just approaching standing heat--the point when she's ready to breed) it's not generally a good idea unless it's an emergency situation. Bitches in season have a much more vascular uterus so the risk of bleeding is greater and generally, particularly with big dogs, most vets prefer, and it's far easier on the bitch to schedule and preform spays on bitches midway between seasons.

If you go searching on the internet about mange you'll find that coming in season will tend to exacerbate both types of mange--demodex and sarcoptic so you may get lucky and you may not. But I'd reschedule the spay for a couple of months down the line, keep working on getting the mange under control and hopefully she will be spayed before she cycles again so you'll only have the mange to worry about.
