not sure what you paid for Vetericyn but I would check out these prices, for future orders :)

Vetericyn

I order from this site a good bit, very prompt service, fast shipping.
I guess it wasn't that bad at Petco - only $35. I just wasn't expecting it! I just wanted to get started with it right away, too.

I may have to look into a better boot once we see how it goes with the sock.

I really, really appreciate all the information and advice.

I got the boot from dogleggs.

The toe sore could be something else perhaps as well? I had Priscilla's checked out because I thought it was a cancer metastasis, and they gave her penicillin which cleared it up quickly. It was a cyst or something.
Since he has had two other lick sores prior to working on the toe, I don't think so. I also catch him licking it all the time. I do plan to talk with the vet about this, but I was kind of hoping to wait a bit as we're going to have to go in for some other stuff in a month or two. If I'm not getting anywhere with our strategies and seeing no improvement in a week or two I will probably take him in.

Here's what I know:

My handler says its caused by a fungus which causes the nerves to tingle, thus they lick. He must be correct because when he takes my dog he uses his remedy. His remedy comes from Argentina and I don't know what it is. But the fungus under the skin sounds logical. Because, everytime she goes with him, it is gone.

When she does it to me, I go outside and cut fresh alovera cactus. I squeeze the juice from that right onto the skin. The juice is alkaline and tastes terrible. So far its worked. But you have to keep re-applying it.

I think the heartworm medicine goes along with the Argentina remedy. He said he does not know what its called in this County but it works on the dogs in Argentina so he uses it. I think its a topical powder.

I do notice its brought on by boredom.

When our first Dobe was older, I took her to the vet several times when she developed a lick sore. Nothing worked to heal it because she wouldn't leave it alone and kept unwrapping whatever I used to cover the sore. After many months of getting nowhere, I decided to try duct tape. I put an antibiotic cream on the sore, put on a toddler sock, wrapped the sock (not too tightly) with a self-stick gauze (something like Johnson and Johnson Hurt-free wrap) and then taped the gauze with duct tape. The duct tape prevented her from removing the sock - she couldn't/didn't chew through it. I used the self-stick gauze so that it was easier to cut off the duct tape and save the sock. I changed the sock, gauze and tape 2x a day. I do admit to spending a small fortune on the gauze, but still cheaper than the repeated vet visits and oral antibiotics.

Hope you can resolve this.

Rocket had matching sores on the top of each foot. I tried about everything, but the only thing that worked was a combo of Schreiner's solution and tea tree oil spray. I didn't wrap his foot, just liberally sprayed twice a day and waited for it to dry. For awhile there he refused to even look at his feet. ;)

I'm seeing good results with the Vetericyn, but Simon's figured out how to get his wrap off, so I may have to do something else to discourage him from licking the area. Did you use a straight tea tree oil spray? Did you spray it right on the sores, or just in the general area?

So how is that going with Simon, Meadowcat?

I saw you mention it in another thread and figured this thread would be a good place to update with the newest addition to my arsenal.

I had tried duct tape on top of her sock and bandages when I went out, but you would be surprised how many billions of pieces of duct tape you have to pick out of the carpet.

I got disgusted the other day and grabbed the packing tape, not the brown one, but the clear tape that is horribly sticky and impossible to tear.

It was a little noisy, she looked a little po'd but lo and behold, when I got home, all was intact!

Of course, it doesn't allow air in for healing, so it wouldn't be something to leave on for a long time.

Thanks for asking. I guess we're kind of at a stalemate. The sore on his toe closed up because he decided to make a new one on the top of his paw instead. He's had a couple of weird, out of the blue chewing stuff up in the house incidents lately (a dog bed, the coat Shanoa was WEARING!, etc.) so I'm a little nervous about putting something on his leg that he might chew off and ingest. He has swallow some (thankfully) extremely small pieces. He seems to have stopped chewing but you can see why I'd be nervous to put anything on him while we aren't here.

It seems like the more I try to treat the sore (Vetericyn, tea tree, all of that) the more he wants to lick it. If I leave it alone it seems to be healing a little. So we have detente for now.

I'm kind of stumped and frustrated, to be honest. But right now it's a pretty small sore and it's not getting worse (if not much better) so we're kind of staying in a holding pattern to see what happens.

I wonder if you could put pinholes in the clear packing tape to get air in and make it work?

Everything is worth a try. I have a pretty big box. :) Oh, dog first aid box, I mean.

Pretty much anything anti-lick hasn't worked on this girl. She has the hereditary disposition, the stressful history, and now, the singularity of that paw to deal with.

It is far worse when I have to go out, so I am glad not to have to do that as much now, or I work around it with my husband's schedule.

I will try the pokey holes MC, thanks for the idea.

It is actually quite small right now but whenever we get there, it seems to go south...

EmilyB, would you recommend the strips etc. To dogs that seem to be OCD but not so bad they have sores? My bloodhound licks a lot and although she has allergies, I don't think all of her licking is due to allergies. My bf and I have both thought there is more OCD than allergies in the licking. I guess why I am concerned is because it is ridiculously annoying to me hearing her lick. Does the licking get worse over time?

It is annoying, I have to nudge her at night often to stop it.

There is a reason for licking, and every dog is different.

Sometimes it is as simple as your dog being bored.

So, you have a bloodhound. I assume you do a lot of scent work with her? (See what I mean?)

The lick strips are useless imo. I keep trying to give them away....hint, hint..

I have no doubt you have a big box! :D The Apinol is oily.. it will stay where you spray it. Please at least consider giving it a try! As I said before.. I have used it in the past on chronic licking.. and, it worked!

It also made a mole I had right under my bra strap disappear! It's amazing stuff.

Unfortunately she does no other activities other than being a spoiled rotten house dog. She is very timid and I have never been able to develop into a strong leader for her, so she doesn't want to give me that trust out in public (she will go anywhere the bf wants her to go). We do go to my parents house multiple times a week for off leash, big yard exercise. We do basic obedience training at home. But, you are probably right that she is bored. If I have worn her out, then she goes to sleep immediately.

I think I will try that. Someone suggested that to me a long time ago (not on this forum), and i completely dismissed the recommendation. Hey, we cant all be perfect with our first dog, right? :emo11: She is VERY food motivated, so I guess that will be what she finds...
